26 Brentwood School Preparatory House Reading 1st Team: Jai Patel, Devanshi Sinha, Claudia Boyce, Lizzy Ebden Bayman’s House Reading On a much awaited day in Brentwood School, in the hall, we held a Reading Competition. The contestants for Bayman (in year order) were Jai Patel, Devanshi Sinha, Claudia Boyce and Elizabeth Ebden. Year 3 read Fables, Year 4 read Poems, Year 5 read Non-Fiction, but Year 6 didn’t know what they were reading until the end and only had 5 minutes to practise! The feeling of being on stage was nerve- wracking but also quite exciting. We sat eagerly behind our desks, waiting for the score. The judge was so friendly and told us the good things about our performances, and gave us great advice on how to become better. In the end, Bayman was victorious and won, hurrah hurrah, and we all jumped for joy! Written by: Devanshi Sinha and Claudia Boyce Senior House Cricket 1st: Bayman 2nd: Lawrence 3rd: Heseltine 4th: Quennell Junior House Cricket After Spring, Bayman, Lawrence, Heseltine and Quennell participated in a house junior cricket tournament. In Bayman’s first game they played against Heseltine, the cricketers for Bayman were Zac Durham, Oscar Burke, David Ekeh, Harry Barden, Henry Jupp, Oscar Field and Freddie Johnston. The under-dogs (Bayman) beat Heseltine by eight runs, this was a victory to remember considering they had two Essex players being Johnny Pilgrim and William Dowlen. Our second game came five days later, we faced Quennell, the favourites. Sadly, Bayman lost by eight runs but this wasn’t a worry as we won our next game against Lawrence by thirty two runs. Now we were praying that Heseltine had beaten Quennell otherwise they would win. Heseltine pulled through and beat Quennell. We came joint first so overall a successful year for cricket. The first event, the 800m (which I will be talking about) began. “Go!” shouted Mrs Woodford and the 800m started. Everyone started very quickly but got slower as the race went on. By the first lap Josh Knightbridge had already made a big gap. I was in second place and Finn was in third. As everybody got nearer to the finishing line they got more and more tired. In the end Josh came in first place and won the prize for the 800m. I came second and Thibaud just overtook Finn at the end to come third. It was a great race and everybody enjoyed themselves. By Ted Buggle Individual Senior girls Lizzy Ebden 1st Individual Senior boys Varun Gupta and Ted Buggle Joint 3rd This has been an excellent year for Heseltine, with many successes in a wide range of events, particularly in sport. We continue to dominate in rugby, having won the Senior event for several years in a row. We were also the most successful House in non-sport events, winning the General Knowledge and Public Speaking and only losing the House Reading by one point. It has not been a great year for House Points though as we finished in last place every term. Every pupil has had the opportunity to compete in the majority of events and many have chosen to showcase their music and interests in House Meetings. General Knowledge The House General Knowledge Quiz took place on Friday 12th February and we were represented in the competition by Tobi Olajide (Year 3), William Dowlen (Year 4), Dmitry Molostvov (Year 5) and Faris Fahal (Year 6). All pupils did plenty of practice and preparation in House Meetings and, thanks to our very knowledgeable team, were the winners of this year’s competition. House Reading Competition This year’s Reading Competition, which was judged by Mr G Davies, was based on the theme of ‘money and riches’ and we were ably represented by Abigail Barham in Year 3; Sophie Young in Year 4; Ben Howard in Year 5 & Faris Fahal in Year 6. Abigail read a traditional story, Sophie read a poem and Ben read a non-fiction text. Faris’ text was an unseen extract from ‘Treasure Island’. All contestants had plenty of practice and read extremely well. This enabled us to finish in second place, only one point behind the winners. Public Speaking Heseltine were represented this year by the following Year 6 pupils: Alex Lockyer, Dia Nafis, Elizabeth Smillie and Ellie Merritt as reserve. Alex gave a great speech without resorting to notes and was able to amuse both adults and children. Dia and Elizabeth also spoke very well, delivering interesting and thought-provoking speeches on a range of topics. Sports Day We finished in second place this year thanks to some great individual and team performances. Damifola Odelusi won both the 100m and 200m and, along with Emeka Okafor, Obi Okafor and Finn Hennessy, came second in the 4x100m relay. Flinn Charleston won the Year 5 100m D event by a significant margin and Kian Suzanger won the Year 4 100m C event. Tobi Olajide was another star performer, winning the 80m and 200m events. Anna-Kaye Fullerton finished second in both the 100m and 200m and helped the Year 4 relay team (Elisa Huen, Chloe Dewar, Ishneet Batthu and Sophie Young) finish in second place overall. We did particularly well in all the relay events, winning the Hockey & Sprint, Year 3 Girls 5x80m, Year 4 5x100m, Years 3&4 Boys 5x100m B and Years 5&6 Boys 4x100m D in addition to the relays already mentioned.
