28 Brentwood School Preparatory proper equipment. The extra weight of the equipment made it feel like I was walking through quicksand. We went onto the cricket pitch in pairs and played on a damp spring morning. It was really fun, we played a game where we batted 2 overs per pair, and getting out meant that your house lost 5 runs. It was a tight match which we won by only 4 runs. We felt proud and relieved that we won a very close match. Next, we played Bayman, who had also won their first round against Quennell. We both played in the very hard rain. Worried that the match might get called off like last year due to heavy rain, we ran to a huge tree for shelter. When it cleared up, we continued getting runs without wasting any more time. It was a close match as well but we lost despite our perseverance. We came in a surprising second place overall. The order was: first place Bayman, second place Lawrence, third place Heseltine, and last place Quennell. It was a good outcome and everybody in Lawrence was happy with the results. It wasn’t to be our year but you can all be proud of your achievements on the day. Public Speaking Competition On Friday 28th April 2017 it was the day of House Public Speaking. We all finished our first lessons and took our places in the hall. All the pupils, staff, parents and the judge, Mr Murley, soon followed after. The competition began and our first Lawrence representative was Savannah who performed really well. After that it was Isabella and Priyan who spoke excellently. Near the end our reserve, Adnan spoke and then it was the end of the competition. The judge came in with results first with the house result. The winner was……………….. LAWRENCE! The individual winner was Alex who got to give the vote of thanks at Prize Giving! It was a great competition and we were so pleased to have won. By Priyan Balasegaram House Reading Competition I read a biography about Richard Branson (who created Virgin). I read second because the lollipop I chose was number two. I was really nervous before, but whilst I was reading it actually felt much better! I had practiced sooooo much! In my team was Toby (Year 3), Hadassah (Year 4) and Emily (Year 6). I’m in Lawrence and we came last, Quennell came third, Heseltine came second and Bayman came first! In my Year 5 was competing against Claudia (Bayman), Alistair (Quennell) and Ben (Heseltine). On the Monday before the competition we had a rehearsal and make sure our piece wasn’t too long. My piece was about one minute long, which was just right. The competition took place on the Thursday and we dressed up because it was World Book Day. The theme was about Money (the Poor and the Rich) and that is why my piece is about Richard Branson, how he made so much money creating Virgin. I dressed up as Hetty Feather, not anything to do with Virgin or Richard Branson, but I really enjoyed the day. By Amman Johar 5AP House General Knowledge Competition I was part of the Lawrence team for the General Knowledge competition. There are four teams, one from each house. On each team there was a member from each year. I was the Year five member on the Lawrence team. There were different rounds of questions, for example, there was a picture round. Each house took a turn to answer and each person in that house took their turn to answer a question. Mr Whiskerd and Mr Holtby asked the questions. Heseltine won the competition, Lawrence and Bayman came joint second with Quennell in last place. I was honoured to be a part of the team and I am looking forward to the House General Knowledge Quiz next year. By Luke Fehily 2016/17 has been an excellent year for Lawrence, one in which every single pupil has represented their house in one way or another. We have seen children rise to challenges and push themselves harder than ever before. Without the care and effort from all pupils, Lawrence would not be as successful as we have been this year. Both Mr Edwards and Mr Prideaux have thoroughly enjoyed being Lawrence House Tutors this year and couldn’t be prouder of every child. Football There were some tremendous matches in the Junior Boys’ Tournament. Both of the teams tried hard with the A team finishing fourth and the B team as runners up. Overall, the Junior boys finished in third place. The Junior girls put in a similar effort with the B team finishing third and the A team, also, as runners up. Once again, overall, we came third. Hockey This year saw the first ever House Hockey Competition. Our U11 team won all of their matches and were thus crowned as the inaugural House Hockey Champions. Well done to everyone who took part. Rugby After three very good performances from our rugby team we narrowly lost out in our final match to finish the competition as runners-up. Well done to captain Charlie Thomas and his team.
