Brentwood School Preparatory 47 Our final topic of the year ‘All Creatures Great and Small’ focused mainly on the science of animals and life cycles. The children investigated the structures of different animals and plants and learnt how to scientifically sort them. They use a variety of materials to make animal masks and oil pastels to disguise themselves as an animal of their choice. A trip to Barleylands and an exciting visit from some owls helped the children consolidate what we had learnt in the classroom about different plants, animals and their features. An interest in animals began a desire for a school pet, so after exploring and adapting the story of Dear Zoo, the children wrote their own Dear School letters to Mrs Audas asking for a pet for the classroom. Mrs Audas thought very hard about the requests and a week later some caterpillars arrived in class much to the children’s delight. Watching them change and adapt over time, the children kept a diary of their observations and, once the caterpillars had transitioned into butterflies, we released them in our walled garden. What advice would you give to the children coming in to this class next year? 1 Try your hardest and enjoy learning 2 Year one is great, have fun 3 The teachers are very nice to you 4 Be kind and help each other in the playground 5 Practice your handwriting Magic Moments and Wise Words
