A Fly On The Wall - Year Five Mersea My group’s first activity was low ropes. In low ropes there were many different obstacles that we had to complete, for example, we had to use our balance to walk over the wooden plank but the plank was wobbly. Our next activity which was Kit Carts. Kit Carts was where we had to make a cart and then take it in turns to drive it. We practised driving then we took our carts up a hill and drove them down. I thought it was fun but I was nervous when I drove the cart down the hill because they were fast and hard to steer. Finally we got ready for bed, brushed our teeth, put our pyjamas on and got our sleeping bags out. It was a great day. Thursday was a very busy day and my group had climbing, high ropes, caving and team challenge. My favourite activity was climbing because it was a massive rock wall that we had to climb up. I enjoyed that as I like climbing. My least favourite activity was caving because there were very big spiders in the tunnels and I didn’t like the size of the tunnels. It was also dark and hard to see where you were going. Luckily we had torches but it was still dark. Soon it was Friday, the last day, we did It’s a Knockout, everyone did this activity at the same time. It’s a Knockout was all on inflatables. It was all different challenges you had to complete against another group. My group’s first challenge was Gladiator. Gladiator was where you and the other person from the opposite team had to try knock each other off the podium but if you do get knocked off it’s a bouncy castle so it doesn’t really matter. We did many more challenges including Inflatable Obstacle Race, Bumble Bee, Water things (I didn’t do it because I had no spare clothes) and Bungee Run. Wow! I enjoyed Mersea a lot, it was a great experience and extremely fun too! Mersea Island - Climbing, Caving and Mud! In the last week of the penultimate half-term, we had our Enrichment Week. My favourite days were when we camped overnight in Mersea. It was my first time doing caving. I was slightly anxious at the beginning, but seeing all my friends doing it encouraged me to give it a try. We all worked together to find out the way. After doing a lap in the tunnels we did it repeatedly. Soon everyone was able to do it backwards! After doing so, we all got a laugh when we found out that one or two people had got stuck in the small tunnels! We were all in a great mood and when our instructor asked us if we could map out the tunnels we were just about able to complete it! My proudest moment was on the Leap of Faith. It was a high, thin, wooden pole that you had to jump off the top of and reach the trapeze bar. I had to go first and couldn’t stand on the top as it was quite small and there were no handles to reach for. Then, Mrs Corp came and told me to imagine it was the Eiffel Tower and that I needed to stand on the to of it to survey the whole of Paris. That made me step on the top! The mud bath was fantastic. You were led towards a pit and in the pit was all the mud. Then we went in pair by pair, you could swim, jump or leap in. You had to be careful about your shoes because they might have fallen off. You did not have to do it if you didn’t want to. These are the sad parts about doing it: You get covered in mud and have to get a shower. You smell very bad. Your feet squelch when you move. But, apart from that it was really fun! Camping in Mersea As we clambered onto the coaches, chattering, we wondered what would happen at Mersea. What sort of tents were there? What kind of activities could we do? What did the lunch hall look like? While some people talked animatedly about Mersea, others dozed in seats, or, in my case, read a book and solved crosswords. As we crossed a bridge, we saw little rocky islands, surrounded by flowing water. The change in the scenery launched a fresh wave of excitement into the coach, and soon, every one of us was chatting to each other again. Brentwood School Preparatory 60 Enrichment Week
