Brentwood Preparatory School Incipe 2017-18

Brentwood School Preparatory 68 A Fly On The Wall - Year Six We lifted it up and put a thick wooden stick through the ferris wheel and, holding the stick from each side, lifted it to let people spin it. It spun amazingly well and we were all so amazed. We all had a great day. Architecture This year I was selected to take part in an Architecture workshop along with some other children. We learnt how to construct strong models and the importance of triangles in some architectural buildings. We enjoyed a wide range of activities such as designing and building our own bridges. One of the last challenges was making our own skyscraper by stacking tripod upon tripod upon tripod. We secured our build using rubber bands, sadly after it reached 12ft the wind pushed it over despite our best efforts to save it. Overall I greatly enjoyed the workshop and would love to do more. Architecture Workshop This workshop was all about architecture and designing. There were ten of us from this school and four other schools. The Bridges We first started to make our own tripod using thin wooden sticks and rubber bands. I learnt that when making a bridge or any structure you should have triangles on the surfaces and edges to make the bridge strong and stable. We also added sticks to the bottom of our tripods to make it strong from all places. Some of us were mixed with other schools to join our tripods together to form a bridge. Once we had finished, we tested them and only one of the other group’s bridge collapsed because their rubber bands were loose. The Tower Our instructor for the workshop, told us to make four 2D triangles, then we tied them all together. She told us that joining eight of the shapes was her highest record and I guess we got caught up in that. We made our tower higher and higher but sooner or later sadly it fell. The Ferris Wheel We all started to make flat triangles and then we joined them together, which creates a Tetrahedron. Then we had a large black pole and put our Tetrahedron next to it, one at a time and wrapped a load of rubber bands around it to attach the triangles securely. Once we had done that we connected all of the sides together to make it properly secure to form our ferris wheel. 6ST Class Football! The rain fell solemnly on the muddy field as the ambitious player rushed forwards hoping for the best. He dribbled past the defender and scored! By the end of the match we had won 2-0 against 6JS. Next we played 6AM. They put up a good fight scoring the first goal but we retaliated with the ball in the top corner of the net - a lovely strike from Oliver. After that, the team against us scored again. We were down heartened but still we pushed on once more. We scored twice and, with the ball in the net, the game was won and it was 3-2 to us! We stood there cheering and celebrating but had to get off the pitch because they had to see who would be playing us in the finals. 6JS won against 6AM so would play us for the second time. The next match was an important one and we started out with a winning attitude; we felt like we could win and by half time we were 1-0 up. In the last half, all we did was defend. With one of our very few attacks, we went hell for leather and scored with just one minute left. We knew we had won! We have to say our favourite part was working as a team and supporting each other. It was very funny when Alex slipped on the ice, and got covered in muddy snow! My Skiing This year I have competed in quite a few ski competitions. I started the season at Christmas when I went to Val D’Isere for three weeks where I trained for 4 hours every morning. My coach was Gerrard Bonville who went to the 1976 Winter Olympics in Innsbruck with the French team. After that, I had the English Championship in Bormio, Italy. I had two races; Giant Slalom and the Combined. I did quite well in each discipline coming 18th in the Giant Slalom and 20th in the Combined which I was relatively pleased with. Now onto the biggest race of the season, the British Championship. In this race I had Combined, Slalom and Giant Slalom. I wasn’t as successful in this race as I had a bad first run and DNF in the second run. The Combined was the best race for me all season because I came 15th out of 84 boys competing so I was very pleased with my performance. I learnt a lot at the races and am happy with my performances. Overall I have had a great season and thank you very much for letting me have time off school to let me ski. Can’t wait for next season….
