Story Corner The Legend of Queen Beauty Can anyone be Queen with evil genes? Could Queen Beauty ever live a normal life? So many questions. Well here is how it all started… It all started off with Aurora and her secret baby. Well, it isn’t so secret now. She wanted Beauty to live a calm life and not have to go through that hullabaloo with the spinning wheel. No Evil Queen, and most of all, NO MAGIC OR CURSES! So she gave Beauty to a loving single mother. Little did she know who she actually was. I’ll give you a clue. SPINNING WHEEL… One day, Maleficent had fallen pregnant. Long before Beauty. Her daughter, Molly, was very competitive. She would never go down without a fight. In the deep depths of the woods of Chanel Town, there was a competition. The winner would become the next King or Queen. Of course, all she wanted was to win. To be Queen, she could cause evil all over the country. The competition had started with a bow and arrow belonging to the last Queen. No-one in town could shoot an arrow into the bullseye unless they were to be the future ruler. “Go away you filthy peasant, I can’t have you seen with me. It will ruin my reputation. Go on a walk in the courtyard!” screamed Molly. So Beauty took a stroll in the yard. There wasn’t much to see. Except a very peculiar bow and arrow. She had no idea what the bow and arrow were for, as she never left the house. So she picked it up, pulled back the thread of the bow. Took an arrow out of the quiver. Then, as swift as an eagle, the arrow flew into the bullseye. “What have you done?” questioned Molly. “Why have you picked up the bow to take credit for what that kind daring knight has done?” Beauty had only just realised there was a man behind her waiting for his turn. His face looked shocked. “I swear, I didn’t do it! I just wanted to have a go at archery,” replied Beauty. “Well, if you did shoot it then, I guess if you tried to shoot it again it would work. Would it?” So the town square filed in to watch the young girl humiliate herself. No-one expected what happened next. BANG! That was the sound of the arrow hitting the bullseye. People watching came round to praise her, this was their new queen taking over the throne. “Long Live Queen Beauty!” shouted the public in joy. Little did they know Beauty only had 8 years left until her encounter with Maleficent and her spinning wheel… A Winter’s Tale Of Friendship A storm, following several days of snow, blocked us in for good. We had been told of the coming weather, and had been locked inside a cramped room, surrounded by the hazardous lighthouse. We thought we were alone, but I soon figured we had unpleasant company. The night everything started, Darek was busying himself with the cleaning. I sat on the bed, peering out at the sea clashing vigorously into the jagged rocks. I suddenly heard a voice. Then an ear-piercing wail. I’d been convinced that we were alone; or was it really just us two in this ghoulish lighthouse... The mystifying noises continued. I was anxious about these perplexing cacophonies that Darek seemed deaf to. He begged innocence though I wasn’t so sure. I watched Darek like a hawk on its prey to see if he was causing all the curious noises. I saw his look of disgust turn to anxiety as he realized my actions. Subsequently I became more and more intrigued. One blustery day, while Darek was sleeping soundly like a sloth, I fumbled with the lock of the creaky door and slipped into the reticent lighthouse. The stairs twisted upwards, damp from the moist air that poured in between mossy bricks. I shouted up the stairs, but the only answer I got was the petrifying creak of the lighthouse . My heart was in my throat, banging rapidly like a bass drum. I wobbled up the uneven steps until I reached an scratched message on the wall. It read: All I know is darkness, Carry on to reveal your fate, You and I we could be friends, Just you climb and wait . . . I dared to climb on further. Fear had taken charge of my trembling body. The silence of the darkness was disturbed by thunderclaps filling the air with emphatic, banging music. A blinding lightning flash revealed a dark hooded figure eating the shadows. Screaming, I darted to the door that abruptly slammed in my face. I was trapped. Hurrying swiftly around the circular room I stumbled and slipped around, only to fall with a crash. Blood trickled gradually down the figure’s black cloak as he slithered over to my shaky body. As supple velvet skimmed my face I thought this is it. This was the end. A vivid light suddenly shone at the hooded menace. Dazzled, he stumbled backwards, only to trip over the rugged carpet and fall, through the shattered window. As he disappeared into the whistling sea below, I gave a trembly cheer. To my extreme surprise my companion Darek appeared from behind the lighthouse lamp! My heart leaped with joy when I knew he was my saviour. So here I am now with Darek. After the long adventure we had both learnt something. I’ve become braver, stronger, but I’ve also learnt to trust Darek more. As for Darek, well, he loves shining the lighthouse lamp. We always illuminate the whistling sea below, searching for the hooded figure; but we have never found him. Brentwood School Preparatory 81
