Brentwood Preparatory School Incipe 2017-18
Our Sporting Achievements Sports Day On Wednesday 20th June the whole of KS2 went to the running track for Sports Day! Everybody was so excited. The four houses of Brentwood Preparatory School took part. The houses are called Heseltine, Bayman, Quennell and Lawrence. Year 3 were so excited because it was their first Sports Day. I was competing in three races. The 80m sprint, the relay race and the sack race. There were four tents on the field for each house to wait in until their race was called. Heseltine sang a song to encourage their runners. It was so hot I thought I was going to get burnt like a crisp. I came second in my sprint race, 1st in the relay and 4th in the sack race. After all of the races it was announced that Heseltine were the winners of sports day and I am in Heseltine! Heseltine hadn’t won for 20 years, but this was Heseltine’s year. My first sports day ended in victory. It was the best day ever and I can’t wait until next year. It was time, and we were ready! We marched down the field proudly wearing yellow. We were Heseltine and together we could do anything. When we had settled down in our house pen, supportingly holding up our H.E.S.E.L.T.I.N.E. letters and the parents were ready, the beginning of the Sports Day was announced. The long 600m and 800m runs were first up as the teachers wanted to make sure that the “athletes” didn’t have to run long distances in the heat (because midday and afternoon are usually hotter than the morning). This was good and bad, good because I didn’t have to race in the sun but bad because it meant I’d have to be in one of the first races, as I was in the year 5 girls 800m race. After my race, won by Quennell’s Elisabeth (this was not my best race due to my hay fever kicking in), there wasn’t much time to rest as five minutes later I was called up for my 100 metre sprint race which I came third in, to win my first points for Heseltine! I then finally had some time to rest, phew!!! Quennell were winning most of the races but we were getting lots of second and third places. Next up were the fun races with Year 3 competing in a sack race. I vividly remember Jean-Luc falling and the teachers helping him to finish the race despite his injuries whilst being spurred on by the crowd. Year 4 were challenged to an egg and spoon race. Year 5 raced in a shuttle and spoon race which involved throwing bean bags into a hoop before sprinting with an egg and spoon to the finish line. I came third in my category, yay, more points for Heseltine! Finally year 6 completed an obstacle course to end the morning session. Then it was then lunchtime. This was served as a cold packed lunch containing a chocolate frog, for energy of course. We returned to the shade of the school building and ate in our classrooms. It was then straight back out to the field to start the relay races, the highlight of the afternoon. Backwards and forwards they ran, so fast it was blinding. In fact I was so entranced that I completely forgot to check the time and in what felt like two seconds it was my turn! ‘Over the rainbow, into the honey pot’ (this was a way to remember to arc the baton and push it into the next person’s hand) and it was my turn; run, run, run, close up the gap, ‘you can do it’ but it wasn’t enough and we came last,‘oh well’. After a few more races we reached the end of the day which was to be closed out by a brand new event, the Year 6 leavers tug of war!!! We, Heseltine, were up against Lawrence first. ‘Come on Heseltine, PULL!’, one last pull and we were over the line and on our way to the final. Well done Heseltine. But first it was Bayman against Quennell to see who we’d be up against in the final. And it was…Quennell! Arghhh! Then Lawrence challenged Bayman to see who would come third and fourth. Finally it was time for the final, Heseltine vs Quenell. ’Pull pull pull Heseltine, come on!!!’ And victory was ours!!! In the prize giving ceremony, Quennell and Bayman were winning most of the individual awards and it looked like Quennell were going to win. Finally, the announcement we had all been waiting for… Heseltine WON sports day for the first time in 20 years!!! Brentwood School Preparatory 88
