ARU Research Report 2019
34 The Up Project Recommendations for Implementing Intergenerational Programmes Through the feedback and experiences of those involved in this research the following recommendations have been made for those considering implementing an intergenerational programme (IGP). These recommendations relate best to those which occur between a school and care home, however some have implications across varied forms of IGPs. Keep it Simple The Up project is relatively simple is in approach, comparative to some IGPs which opt for more elaborate activities and forms of engagement. However, this research suggests this approach can have as meaningful positive outcomes. Smaller scale, and less elaborate IGPs could therefore be accessible to others, even those who do not necessarily have an in-depth knowledge of them, or large amounts of funding to support them. The Up project demonstrates that with experience and knowledge of their unique contexts (and those within them), and successful collaborative partnerships, others can design relatively sustainable and impactful IGPs. Collaboration is Key The Up project is a collaborative effort, and it involves commitment from both the care home and school to ensure its delivery and continuity. Without such, a long-term partnership and sustainable IGP would not be possible. Engage with Wider Ambitions The Up project is an exemplar of an IGP innovated to fit the needs and context of the school and care home, in which shared ambitions such as community were the foundations of the project. This demonstrates the synergies that can be created with others, and as such IGPs can be the vehicle by which wider ambitions are realised. Consistency Consistency of visits and individuals involved played several key roles in the implementation of Up. The first is most obvious, consistency of visits provides a routine, an expectation and a structure. The second is related to collaboration, as with consistent staff members’ partnerships are made easier to build and maintain. The third is relating to the support and facilitation that consistent adults offer to the children and older adults engaged in the Up project. Consistency of adults allows for a network and environment of trust and familiarly to develop, in which adults can support those involved through interactions (e.g. teaching staff to model behaviour to children, or for care home staff to respond to needs of the older adults). Preparation & Support Preparing the children taking part in the Up project was viewed as particularly significant for teaching staff. This preparation was important given the new environment and experiences which the project entailed. Preparation involves information and support, allowing space for the children to express any concerns and for these to be responded to. It was also described that preparing oneself, in terms of those leading the initiative was significant.
