Brentwood School Preparatory Remembrance 48 Florence Nightingale The Great Fire of London At the start of 2017, Year Two finished their work on Victorians with a visit from ‘Florence Nightingale’ after learning about her revolutionary work in hospitals following her work in the Crimean War. The majority of Lent term was dedicated to learning all about The Great Fire of London. The children became totally immersed in the topic during our ‘Build a Tudor House’ in which they learnt what a Tudor house would have looked like in London in 1666. They also got to participate in the trades of the time and learnt about everyday life. They learnt about Samuel Pepys and why his diary writing was important. In addition, they recreated their own ‘Great Fire of London’ in the Prep 3-7 playground by burning their own Tudor House models made from shoe boxes and cereal packets in a fabulous finish to the topic. In November, Year Two represented Brentwood School by attending the act of Remembrance at the War Memorial in Middleton Hall Lane, laying small crosses with personalised dedications after the service.
