Secrets of the School The Story of Middleton Hall - Ground Floor Entrance and Quiet Room The beautiful main entrance to the school is the home of two fascinating artefacts which pupils, parents and staff walk past every day. Next time you pass through, take a closer look at the marble topped cabinet next to the front door, and the fire guard around the fireplace. The cabinet is actually the altar, and the fireguard is the altar rail from Countess Tasker’s private chapel. Library Was this Countess Tasker’s drawing room? It is very easy to picture her in here enjoying the sunshine streaming through the wonderful leaded bay windows. Dining Room We believe this may have been the Taskers’ original dining room, although the large bay window seems to be a later addition. There is still a wonderful old gas lamp next to the fireplace in here. Deputy Head’s Office Before the present Reception and Year Three building was constructed, this was the very cosy Headmaster’s office. The carved pews outside this room, and those outside the library, are the originals from Countess Tasker’s chapel. As there is a disused door from the Dining Room into this room, it could have been a snug for the gentlemen to retire to after dinner….. Outside this office there is a door leading down to the cellars. Year Six Classroom (6AS) This large, light filled room could have been Countess Tasker’s music or dining room. Porters’ Office This was once the Deputy Head’s office, but previously may have been the Taskers’ kitchen and scullery. North Extension Countess Tasker was responsible for the North Extension in around 1900. This now makes up the kitchen, two Year Six Classrooms, two Year Four classrooms and a Year Five classroom.
