Brentwood Prep Incipe 2019

Brentwood School Preparatory 20 Secrets of the School The Story of Middleton Hall - First Floor Year 4 Classrooms (4SF and 4ST) In between these two classrooms there used to be a narrow third classroom permanently set up with chess tables and boards. Chess was a subject on the curriculum for all the boys of the Prep. Opposite these classrooms is a small flight of stairs leading up to a locked door, the subject of much speculation! This actually leads up to a balustrade on the roof. Year Five Classroom (5NE) This is believed to be Countess Tasker’s bedroom. The ornate stone balcony leading out from this room overlooks the sweeping carriage driveway and gardens and extends out over the library bay window The stairs leading up to the second floor from the corridor outside 5NE are believed to be the original servants’ staircase. Before the house was extended, these stairs would have also led down to what we believe may have been the Taskers’ kitchen, now the Porters’ office. Staff Room This was the Taskers’ beloved family chapel. A raised area in the bay window was the altar where the Taskers would have received Holy Communion. The family and servants would have used this room regularly. Next to the fireplace there remains an old servants’ bell. Matron’s Office When the house first became a school, this was the boarders’ bathrooms. The old cubicle divisions can still be seen in the walls. Year 4 Classroom (4LM) Down the side of this classroom there is a narrow passage leading to the boys’ changing rooms and, bizarrely, a modern shower! This corridor seems to be a later addition to the house, possibly when it first became a school.
