Brentwood Prep Incipe 2019

Brentwood School Preparatory 24 Old Brentwoods With a passion for music, particularly Schubert, Lord Black discovered the power of music at Brentwood School. During a recent House of Lords debate about the state of music education in schools which was moved by Lord Black, he said, “Brentwood School is a good place to start, because it was there that I fell in love with music. With the encouragement of my parents, I learned instruments, I played in orchestras, I sang in the choir and took O and A-level music. I did all the things that every young person should have an opportunity to do. I took that music education for granted as, back then, it was the birthright of every child.” He believes that music should be the fundamental right of all children and that, in his own words, “Music matters first and foremost because it is the only universal language which connects all human beings.” We were delighted that Lord Black kindly answered our questions about his time at the Prep so eloquently. We feel he has really brought his Prep years to life! Was there a particular teacher you remember and why? There were so many fine teachers at the Prep that it seems invidious to single one out! I shall always be grateful to Miss Jarrett who settled a shy and very nervous boy into her class on the first day, and made me feel so welcome and so happy to be a part of the School. She passed me on a year later to Mrs Hobbs, who was a wonderful and empathetic teacher. But if you force me to name one in particular then I have always believed that Mr Halford – to whom so many owe so much – was a fantastic teacher and who above all absolutely typified the ethos of Brentwood School, encapsulated in those three, enduring words: “virtue, learning and manners.” I still bump into Frank occasionally – and he is as full of beans as ever, always interested in what is going on in my life, and above all full of wisdom and sage advice. Lord Black of Brentwood A proud Old Brentwood, Lord Black went on to achieve an MA in History at Peterhouse, Cambridge. Now, a committed Governor of Brentwood School, Lord Black is also the Chairman of the Royal School of Music, Deputy Chairman of the Telegraph Media Group and a Conservative Peer in the House of Lords. Lord Black is a passionate defender of press and media freedom and free speech in the United Kingdom, the European Union and across the Commonwealth.
