Brentwood Prep Incipe 2019
Brentwood School Preparatory 34 House Reports House Netball As last year, Lawrence found the netball competition tough this year, but will take these experiences, and, along with everything they have learnt in games and PE lessons, will endeavour to build upon them to achieve greater successes in next year’s tournament and try to beat third place. House General Knowledge Every child in Lawrence House competed to earn a place in the general knowledge team. The successful four pupils, then pitted their wits against the best the other three houses could muster. The team comprised of Emily, Harriet, Alex and William. The questions were very challenging and Lawrence did well to keep pace with the leaders, however a bit of bad luck with some tricky questions conspired to relegate the Lawrence team to fourth place. House Reading Lawrence chose the children’s classic, Mr Benn, by David McKee as the subject for their reading competition presentation. Pupils were enthused by the dressing up possibilities of a character who went to a costume shop in every book. Being children of the 70s/80s, Miss Scotland and Mr Edwards were also supportive of the idea. Lawrence pupils did not disappoint with their choice of outfits, with astronauts, cavemen, scuba divers and zookeepers on show to name but a few. On the day of the competition, Leo, Grace, Maadesh, Maia, Oliver, Isabella, Enitoluwa, Katie and Layla read texts about the character of Mr Benn, as well as a poem about fancy dress and an extended extract from ‘Mr Benn and the Space Man’. The crowd were kept on their toes by the fantastic reading, along with several ‘As if by magic’ appearances by the shopkeeper from the story who looked suspiciously like Mr Edwards in a fez. Once the judges had totted up their scores for all the house readings, it was announced the Lawrence would be awarded third place, which seemed a controversial decision going by the crowd reaction. Nevertheless, Lawrence had provided a memorable performance of which they should be rightly proud. House Swimming As always, the galas were fiercely contested and the effort put in by all children was superb. Lawrence worked very hard as a team and as individuals but came fourth. House Public Speaking It was the turn of this year’s Lawrence’s public speakers to impress the judges in an attempt to retain the first place trophy won by last year’s Lawrence team. Our house representatives were James, Alex and Isabella and our reserve was Arun. Mr Whiskerd, Mrs Cooke and the Head of Drama in the senior school, Mr Murley, judged the competition. Although Lawrence finished fourth overall, we were very proud of the performances of each team member. House Cross Country Lawrence house walked out onto the fields, filled with determination. Everybody represented the house brilliantly and showed great team spirit and support for each other. Miss Scotland and Mr Edwards were extremely proud of all the Lawrence runners who showed great grit and perseverance to get around a challenging course with no one running out of puff before the finishing line. Our overall position was third. Sports Day With the spectators out in force and the houses in their enclosures, the scene was set for an epic day of athletics. Lawrence were in good voice to cheer on their housemates in the different races. The vocal support was matched by the fantastic efforts on the track by everyone in Lawrence. It was a tough day results wise, but the attitude was top notch, and a special mention should go out to James who set a new record in the sprint competition. The Lawrence Year Sixes also took part in an exciting tug of war battle which resulted in them coming an impressive second. Overall, Lawrence came fourth, but they can hold their heads up high due to the incredible effort displayed. 2018-19 has been yet another positive year for Lawrence, seeing children achieve academically as well as emotionally and socially in a range of roles such as mentors, buddies, reading partners, actors and sportsmen/women. Lawrence have played a vital role in the continued wellbeing of Brentwood Prep, and have made their house tutors very proud. 2019-20 brings a new house tutor to Lawrence. Miss Johnstone will take over from Miss Scotland, who is continuing her Brentwood School adventure over in the senior school. Lawrence House wishes Miss Scotland the very best and hopes that she will pop back to support us in forthcoming events.
