Brentwood Prep Incipe 2019
Brentwood School Preparatory 40 World Book Day The children from Higgs dressed as characters from Allan Ahlberg books. It was wonderful to see so many skeletons, vets, waitresses, boxers and burglars wandering around school! In KS2, each house chose characters from a favourite book. Oompa Loompas were everywhere from Bayman’s choice of Charlie and the Chocolate factory by Roald Dahl, the school was filled with evacuees from Heseltine’s Goodnight Mr Tom by Michelle Magorian, Lawrence had fun changing into many different characters from David McKee’s Mr Benn series, and Quennell must surely have found it difficult to dress as David Walliams’ World’s Worst Children! The highlight of the day was the annual House Reading Competition. Year Two began the afternoon with a wonderfully amusing rendition of Allan Ahlberg’s ‘What shall we do with the Grumpy Teacher?’, before the KS2 children read extracts from their houses’ chosen books. This year we had four judges including Dr Evans (Head of English in the Senior School), Anne Stairmand (local author) and our own Mrs Marchington and Mrs Cooke who were all very impressed by the children’s reading. While the judges were adding up their scores, Mr Barber kept us entertained by teaching us a wonderful round of wartime songs linked to Heseltine’s book choice. All the brave competitors practised hard to read with confidence and expression - well done to all the children and especially Bayman, the champions of the day. World Book Day was enormous fun. Staff and children alike brought books to life by using them as a theme for dressing up.
