From Mexico, they found out about Dia de los Muertos. the Day of the Dead, when families celebrate the lives and memories of loved ones who have passed away. The celebrations spill out into the streets and squares, and people dress up as skeletons. The children designed their own skull masks, first sketching them then very carefully cutting them out of art board and painting them with beautiful symmetrical designs. From China, the Year of the Pig! After learning about Chinese New Year traditions and finding out which animals they are, Year Four celebrated Chinese New Year in Art lessons by making intricate Chinese dragons. They carefully folded strips of card to make a long concertina body, then added detailed heads and tails to bring their dragons to life. Plastic Bottle Recycling Competition Year Four have been looking at our carbon footprints and have been quite surprised at some of the high results so have been exploring ways in which we can reduce our footprints. Part of their investigation involved thinking about single use plastics, and holding a plastic bottle recycling competition. Mr Long, one of the Geography teachers from the Senior School, came over to judge the competition, and was amazed by the inventiveness and creativity of the children. There were so many imaginative entries: from Ben’s Lancaster Bomber to Shane’s phone holder, Callum’s bird feeder to Ranulph’s water dispenser, Sam’s target ball game to Eva’s hydration station, and Sophie’s football game to Annabel’s night light. It must have been extremely hard to judge. However, after much deliberation, the final results were: Harry’s emergency rainwater tap, “Globally, there are many people who do not have access to fresh water so we should preserve what we can.” - Mr Long Anissa’s jewellery stand and home-made jewellery, “Very nicely designed, it has taken a lot of time and effort to design all the different jewellery.” - Mr Long Cody’s photo frame, “Putting an old milk bottle to good use is a great idea and saves us having to cut down trees to make wooden photo frames. A lot of time and effort has gone into this.” - Mr Long Well done all Year Four entrants!
