Brentwood Prep Incipe 2019
Brentwood School Preparatory 62 Classroom Chronicles - Year Five Year Five became entrepreneurs and may have had a fantastic glimpse into their future by taking part in their Enterprise Challenge. Groups started with a £10 initial investment, financed by Virgin Money, and had to plan a business, source their materials, create their product and sell it at the fair in an attempt to make the most profit. Each group worked collaboratively, but also allocated the roles of Product Manager, Marketing Manager and Finance Manager. There was great excitement and many different ideas for mini- businesses. Bath bombs, sweet treats, crazy drinks, balloons, shoe polishing services, popcorn, pet rocks name but a few. On the day of the fair, the school hall was packed with stall holders and their customers, there was a real buzz in the air with an atmosphere reminiscent of the Boxing Day sales. The hard work and pride of the children was evident, not to mention entrepreneurial passion! After the final count up, the teams collectively made a tremendous profit of £1,195. Congratulations to Sidney, Jack and Oscar for making the most profit as a team, £110 in total, they are able to buy something for the school to enjoy. Well done and thank you to all! Year Five Entrepreneurs We arrived at Waltham Abbey, the home of The Royal Gunpowder Mills and were split into two groups. Our first session was the theatre to watch a play about the gunpowder plot. I thought it was very funny and I learnt that they used to say in the Stuart times as a greeting “Good morrow”. Surprisingly, I also learnt that Guy Fawkes fought with the Spanish in the Catholic army in the Netherlands. Next we learnt about the toys that the Stuarts and Guy Fawkes used to play with, we still play some of these games today! One of the toys we still play with is “Cup’n’ball” which dates back to the 11th century. After that we were taught about lanterns and how they used to be lit by candles in Stuart times. We made lanterns out of black card and we decorated them with firework patterns. After lunch, we had a class about the food they used to eat in Stuart times. I learnt that they didn’t grow potatoes in England back then, they imported them from America! Our last session was about writing messages and making quills. We made quills out of a straw and a feather. I didn’t write a long message, it was so hard to use the quill! So I just wrote my name. By Samiha Gunpowder Mills Trip
