Brentwood Prep Incipe 2019
Brentwood School Preparatory 67 Brentwood Bananagrams, Bake Off and Bikeability Bananagrams We both had made it to the finals. After every single nerve-wracking round, neither of us thought we would be here. For the past few years, we had watched each tense final, wondering how it would feel to be the finalists. Well, now we knew. After an early lunch we could barely swallow, and after each of our friends wished us good luck and promised they would come to watch, we made our way to the library. We sat down. Before we even knew it, the match had started. We took 21 letters and flipped them. This was it. A great way to start is by making big words, which you can then make smaller words from. Soon, both of us had used a lot of our letters. Everytime we briefly looked up, it seemed as if at least ten people had joined to watch. Both of us tried to add some relaxation to the tense environment by laughing nervously or making jokes. Neither of us had had this many eyes looking at us before. After a short while that seemed like eons, we were left with two letters in the middle; we each had to take one… Time for abbreviations. Devanshi got tense because Isabella had made OJ (orange juice), but she didn’t know what it stood for. 5 minutes more. Nothing. To our shock, Mrs Long announced time up. Who had won? It didn’t make sense. Then, she said, for the first time, it was a tie! So we both got the shield. This time round, we realized, it had been an all female, all 6AS final. Later on, Isabella found out what OJ stood for, and swore never to drink orange juice again. Devanshi found out, from the people standing near her, she could have got XP (experience) or Ox. Overall, it was a nerve- wracking but fun XP (experience) and we will remember it. By Isabella and Devanshi Brentwood Prep Bake Off! Mrs Taylor’s Baking Club finished the term with a baking competition that would have given even The Great British Bake Off contestants a run for their money! Each pupil chose their favourite recipe to submit for the first ever ‘Brentwood Prep Bake Off’ competition. From scones and vegan biscuits to bread and soup, everyone sliced, sifted and stirred, ready for the hungry judging panel of Mr Whiskerd, Mrs Williams and Mrs Sheridan. After much deliberation, the judges decided on an afternoon treat, crowning Alyssa, with her delicious scones, jam and cream, the first Brentwood Bake Off champion. Bikeability Despite extremely challenging weather of high winds and lashing rain, Year Six cycled courageously around the streets of Shenfield, listening carefully and learning essential road safety skills while having (usually!) a lot of fun. In their words: “A huge Waitrose lorry came up right behind me. We had indicated, turned out of a T junction and I had just done a U turn when I heard the roar of that van coming up behind me. Oh no! ...Phew! I was in the right position on the road and it went past me. We were safe. What a great experience; I can’t wait to get out there again.” “I enjoyed Bikeability because I like cycling. I really enjoyed the part where we were making our own traffic. I liked it when Kerry was demonstrating and a car did exactly what she said we had to look out for!” “I thought it was really fun! My favourite part was learning to do U turns. In the summer I ride my bike to football training and it will help me a lot. I saw my mum twice too!” “I enjoyed Bikeability. It teaches you ABCDs. Air! Brakes! Chain! Direction! Seat! We improve our ability on a bike - that’s why it’s called Bikeability!”
