Brentwood Prep Incipe 2019
Brentwood School Preparatory 9 Salute Mrs S Howard After many years being a parent of children at Brentwood Pre- Preparatory, Preparatory, and now Brentwood Senior School it’s now my turn to be a member of the school myself. I joined the school about two and a half years ago in a voluntary capacity working alongside Mr Garrett as an Art Technician. However this role has evolved and now I am enjoying teaching Art at Brentwood Preparatory school. My background is nursing. I have worked in a variety of areas beginning in a soccer camp in New York as the camp nurse. From there I have worked in both general nursing and midwifery. I gained a Bsc Midwifery degree after a tough 18 months of working, studying and delivering in excess of 40 babies! I have enjoyed my varied career of nursing but am delighted to now be able to transfer my skills to teaching. I am excited to be teaching art and looking forward to working with the children in the forthcoming terms. Mrs C Miles After working in investment banking for sixteen years in London, I decided, after my twin sons began school, to embark upon a new career. I believe that education offers opportunity and I wanted to be able to help children realise an abundance of exciting opportunities just as my own education has afforded me. I trained as a primary school teacher through Billericay SCITT and spent my first five years as a Year Five and Year Six teacher in a local Catholic primary school. Always keen to challenge myself, in 2017, I started my MA in Education and graduated last autumn. I enjoy teaching all subjects but have a particular passion for mathematics and as part of my Masters programme I investigated how the methods used by children to solve calculations vary according to gender and ability and the impact this has on their mathematical understanding. My first year at Brentwood has been busy and exciting and I have loved being able to teach many different children as well as having my own form. My sons joined the school in Year 7 at the same time as I joined as a teacher so I fully appreciate what a wonderful school Brentwood is in terms of its teaching and the co-curricular activities it offers to its students. Outside of school, I love spending time with my family and am a keen traveller. Last year, we went as a family on holiday to Japan and enjoyed being able to explore a different culture. Miss H Mitchell With Essex being my home, my ties to working in the area are strong. When the opportunity arose to join Brentwood Prep, it was a chance I couldn’t pass up. I knew I would be starting the next phase of my career. I went to Palmers College in Grays where I studied Graphic Design, Photography, English Literature and Language Combined and Sociology. After falling in love with the creative subjects, photography in particular, I knew that is where I wanted my career to be, but in what field exactly was still unknown to me. I was enjoying being a student, the freedom of college and the interaction with my teachers was unlike anything I had known before, which kept me interested. I worked hard and was so very pleased with my A-Level results, and it was then I realised that I still wasn’t sure of my career path. I didn’t feel ready for university, so had planned to get a job for a year, before returning back to education to work at achieving a degree. A month into the summer and I bumped into my Art Teacher from my senior school who told me about a job vacancy, and with nothing to lose and everything to gain I applied and was lucky enough to get the job at Ortu Hassenbrook Academy in Stanford-Le-Hope. Doing a full circle from school to college then back to my secondary school but to work instead of being a pupil was a surreal experience at first, but it did feel like home. My part-time job grew and grew to full time working with pupils in intervention classes and taking care of the school’s marketing. One planned year turned into six unplanned years, yet they were most rewarding years. Towards the end of the academic year in 2018, I felt that I needed a new challenge, something new to grow into. Brentwood Prep seemed the perfect place. Mrs Williams gave me a tour of the Prep and to say I was astounded would be an understatement. The beauty of the building, the polite nature of not only the staff but the pupils too was so wonderful to see, and I knew I would say yes in a heartbeat if I was lucky enough to be offered the job. And I was. I started in September 2018 and within a matter of months I felt as if I had been at the Prep for a lifetime, which is a good thing. Everyone here is so incredibly friendly and helpful, and it almost feels family-like. With my knowledge growing and growing, not only for marketing but for Brentwood School alone, every day is a new challenge and no two days are the same. I am forever grateful the Brentwood Prep took a chance on me and it is safe to say that this was the best move for me. I am incredibly excited to see what happens in the years to come, developing my skills, my knowledge and to watch the school grow.
