Brentwoodian 2019

110 Mr Cohen served as Deputy Head in charge of Co-Curricular activities, our staff Professional Development and the day-to-day planning and organisation of the life of the School. He devised and implemented a structure of staff development which is the envy of most schools. He helped us to develop our Sports provision to ensure that more pupils than ever before have the opportunity to represent the School in competitive fixtures, emphasising the value of participation as well as elite success. He also developed a system to encourage our pupils to reflect on what they gain from their co-curricular activities, showing that all experiences can be learning experiences which help develop our character. He is thoroughly organised, has tremendous energy and a cutting sense of humour, and is admirably decisive. Mr Cohen thoroughly deserves his promotion to Headship of Plymouth College in Devon. We wish him and his family every success and happiness, and hope very much that he will keep in touch with his many friends here. Jonathan Cohen The English Department was sad to say goodbye to Mrs Denman at the end of the last academic year. Veronica returned to us after an absence of some years and was welcomed back by those who knew her. Her energy and dedication, both in the classroom and the office, is second to none and many colleagues and students were privileged to experience her kindness of heart first-hand. She also provided excellent cakes! We thank her for all of her many contributions and wish her all the best in her next adventure. Veronica Denman Miss D’Souza joined the Classics Department in 2017 and brought with her tireless energy and intense love for her subject. Miss D’Souza was key in involving and encouraging budding young classicists to dive into the ancient world during Junior Classics club sessions. She also played a key role in our First Year field day, posing as the dangerous assassin who had poisoned the Headmaster in a day of Roman mystery and intrigue! Miss D’Souza’s jovial, upbeat personality was also instrumental in forming fantastic relationships with her older classes, including A Level students. Outside of the department, Miss D’Souza was able to indulge her love of adventure and the outdoors by attending numerous Duke of Edinburgh treks and helping to organise the South Africa summer expedition. To her colleagues, Miss D’Souza brought a positive, often amusing, attitude to the department every day and developed fantastic friendships here that will long surpass her time at the school. We wish her every success in her new position at Mossbourne Academy in London. Zoe D'Souza Mr Wightman was appointed at Brentwood as Head of Sixth Form Chemistry and served as Acting Head of Chemistry for two terms before he left to join Westcliff High School for Boys. He contributed many resources to the department shared drive, especially toward our teaching of A Level and IB Chemistry. A passionate and enthusiastic subject specialist he also spent a great deal of his time at Brentwood helping to develop practical work and other colleagues' classroom practice. We wish him great success as he embarks on the next chapter of his teaching career. Daniel Wightman
