Brentwoodian 2019

41 Golf After a very successful 2018 season of golf, there was a high reputation for the 2019 golf team to live up to. The team was once again entered into the HMC Foursomes and ISGA matchplay tournament. Early rounds of both competitions were dominated by members of the Brentwood team showing their prowess. However, a key member of the team, Max Porteous broke his ankle which put a spanner into the works. Luckily, Joe Ludlow-Gibbon came into the team pairing up with Pierce Mosley to form a great partnership winning their match convincingly. This win, combined with Sam Mosley and Edward Brown’s (last-minute winner) brought Brentwood into the finals of the HMC foursomes. Brentwood now must play a strong Reed’s team at Tandridge GC in order to qualify for the HMC finals at Rye GC. This year the team has been very motivated and has improved together as a team. We have also travelled to some lovely places such as Hanbury Manor where great golf has been played by all. Next year the team is looking very strong, where new team players will represent Brentwood, and we say goodbye to Ashley Chalmers and Edward Brown. The team is looking forward to make an appearance at the nationals next year. By Ashley Chalmers & Edward Brown Over the last year, fencing has seen various achievements from an international level down to a regional level. The year began with the introduction of our new épée coach, Mr Bence Juhasz, who took over owing to the departure of Mr David Keszler who to Germany to coach the German international team. At Essex Youth we were able to gain 16 very impressive podium places across all age groups, with six bronze medals, five silver medals and five gold medals. The next major tournament was the Eastern Region Youth Championships held in January of 2019. In the U12 Girls’ Foil, Chloe Leslie won a bronze medal and another in the U12 Sabre. Carlysle Bailey finished 3rd in the U16 Boys’ Epée, Jacob Leslie won a silver medal; Jai Anilkumar won a bronze medal in the U18 Boys’ Sabre and Ian Ho managed to finish in 2nd place. Matthew Goodwin finished 2nd overall. Elizabeth Pang was crowned Eastern Region Champion Girls' U14 Sabre. A fantastic number of 13 athletes qualified with these results for the British Youth Championship Finals this year. We had another successful year at the Public Schools Championship, where we participated in three intense days of fencing. Madeleine Gale’s excellent performance over all three weapons resulted in her winning the Champion at Arms trophy for best junior girl and Jacob Leslie and Jack Elsworth deserve credit for finishing 2nd in their respective age group over all three weapons. With these results we were able to win the trophy for the second best girls’ school overall and third best boys’ school. The Public Schools Championship concluded in Brentwood School achieving an astounding second place in the overall ranking. In addition to these incredible achievements, we were proud to see the brilliant team spirit and support that was present throughout the tournament. Fencing at Brentwood School is also very much a successful team experience as two of our school teams won gold in the British Schools Team Championships. On top of these national successes we are very proud that Ian Ho, Matthew Goodwin and Madeleine Gale represented England and Great Britain at various international World Cups.
