Brentwoodian 2019

52 This year of netball has been very successful with some impressive wins. Despite having a team with several new members joining, it was obvious from our first training session that we were going to be a force to be reckoned with: our incredible defence, Grace Parrish, Sarah Dawe and Emma Philpot; our outstanding mid court, Lucy Holloway and Anneliese Gennings; lastly our phenomenal shooters, Evie Mcknight, Annie Shaw and Annabel Eastwood, an extremely talented group of girls that I have thoroughly enjoyed playing with. Looking back over the year the 2nd VII team has excelled and I am so proud to have been their Captain. We have scored a total of 255 goals, which is an incredible amount! Our highlight of the season, and our best game, was against Bishop’s Stortford for the Essex Cup where we won 37-11. Throughout the whole game we worked as a team, and did what we always say at Brentwood School, “played our own game”. This means we played to our strengths and used our fast footwork, and excellent timing to get the ball to goal. It was a well-deserved victory for the girls. One aspect the whole team has is competitiveness which is an exceptional trait. Finally I would like to say a massive thank you to our coach, Miss Sharpe, who through both the good and challenging times, was always there motivating and encouraging us to play our best game. She never doubted our ability! It has been a privilege to be Captain this year with Grace by my side, and I am very proud of what the team has achieved. I am very excited to see what challenges lie ahead for us, and what we can all achieve as players next year. By Grace Cannell SECOND VII Being Captain of the Third VII has been a great experience that I will remember throughout life after Brentwood. Starting the year as just a group of netball players, we have grown closer together and worked extremely well becoming a strong team. We started off the season with our first match against Chelmsford County High. Whilst figuring out how to work well together as a team, we played a fierce match with a strong defence of Ines Mason, Amelia Carnaby-Hayes, Liz Olaiya and Anya Lewonowski and excellent shooting from Amiee Mayhew and Millie Chart. Even though we narrowly lost the match, we played well together and I came off that pitch extremely proud of my team. The highlight of the season has to be our MESSA match against Anglo European School where we won 20-15. This was an immensely close match and our centre court (consisting of Megan Beardwell, Harriet Ellis and Eleanor Griffiths) were working tirelessly to keep the ball down our attacking end. Throughout this tough game we saw some incredible shots from Serena Smalley and Lucy Twyford; Lucy and I were awarded joint Players of the Match. Along with this win, we managed to achieve several others, however, we also lost a fair few of our matches despite us playing well and trying hard. As my penultimate year at Brentwood is coming to its end, I am happy that I have had this opportunity to be Captain of a team and to work with an amazing group of girls over the past year. There have been many highs and lows this season, some incredible shots, excellent interceptions and many laughs, along with unfortunately some injuries and tough losses. However, the girls and I have thoroughly enjoyed this netball season and look forward to next year, we all would like to thank Miss Choate for being a supportive and wonderful coach who is always there for us when we need her. I am going to miss playing netball with these girls and I hope that next season will be as enjoyable as this season has been! By Emma Roper THIRD VII U15 A This year for the U15A netball team has been a good one with its highs and lows. We’ve had great success as a squad, commencing the season with a MESSA match resulting 33-7; there was some fabulous shooting from Fiona Crosby and Niamh Mills. Succeeding this were another three victories, with more excellent play from the defending end and our superb mid court players, namely Ellie Marshall, Eima Cupples and Vice-Captain, Renée Horwitz. However with some injuries, there were occasional challenges, but we pulled through as a team with the help of new addition to the squad, Hunter Honiball. Hunter plays circle defence alongside myself, a winning combination. Rosie Parrish’s presence and skill in the circle was missed, but her continued enthusiasm and support for the team were indispensable. On 7th March 2019, our success continued in the Kelsall tournament, with victories over our main competition, and through until the end of the season. I would like to thank our coach, Miss Atkinson, on behalf of the team for her expertise, help and support throughout the year, and we anticipate another quality season next year. By Heather Young
