41 Coronavirus has been tough for the Fencing Department, with all training and competitions grinding to a halt. However, through Coach Bence, tough but enjoyable sessions during online learning, we as a Fencing community were able to maintain our high standards. There were only a few competitions this year, those that did take place seeing many impressive performances. In the British School Teams Championships, our U13 Girls’ Foil team, made up of Mirabelle Barry, Chloe Leslie, Michelle Nguyen and Megan Taggart took home a bronze and our U18 Boys’ Sabre team with Ian Ho, Folayemi Akinyosoye, Tanay Sonawane and Valentin Ivanov brought home a silver. Other teams fought fiercely, with the U13 Boys’ Epée finishing 8th, U18 Boys’ Foil, 7th and the U15 Boys’ Epée, 5th. In the Eastern Region Championships, spectacular performances by Elizabeth Pang and Jacob Leslie crowned them as U16 Women’s Sabre Champion and U14 Men’s Epée Champion respectively. Following our regional and national successes, both Ian Ho and Maddy Gale, having represented the country on multiple occasions, had ranked high enough in the country to qualify and attend the Cadet European Championships in Poreč, Croatia, a feat which had not been achieved in Brentwood School for a decade. With them were Chris Galesloot and James Williams, acting both as Brentwood School coaches and British Fencing Head Coaches in their corresponding weapons.
