Cadre was one of my favourite years in the CCF, not only because we were able to develop our interpersonal skills as part of ‘Flight’ groups carrying out command tasks and practising our leadership skills, but also because of the fantastic support we received from senior cadets. Having been successfully appointed to the role of Cadet Warrant Officer in my final year at Brentwood, I was elated to be given the opportunity to lead 100+ cadets at one of the oldest and largest CCFs in the country! This appointment, unfortunately, coincided with the COVID-19 lockdowns. Nevertheless, despite our reduced in-person engagements, Flight Sergeants George North, Keanu (Ziggy) Wamae, Ethan Barton and I were all still able to conduct our regular Friday CCF sessions via Zoom with the help of our senior officers and lots of virtual activities.When we were finally able to meet together in-person, one of my favourite roles was getting to know the new cadets fromYear 9 who had only just joined the Section. Their energy and enthusiasm for each new command task and team activity were fantastic to see, and I have no doubt that their passion for CCF will continue to grow, as mine did, as they progress through the CCF themselves. Beyond the CCF curriculum, I found that participating in camps and courses was an amazing way to build an even bigger sense of community spirit, develop my confidence and leadership skills and build meaningful friendships along the way.
