Brentwoodian 2021

87 Like a phoenix rising from the flames, once again, through a challenging school year, the boys of Hough House have done themselves and the boarding community proud. Some, like Ran Lin, who was in China and could not get back to the UK, spent the whole of Lent and Trinity term completing his lessons online. Ran hardly missed anything which is an amazing feat considering the time difference is seven hours which meant his school day started at three thirty in the afternoon and finished at eleven at night - what dedication and resilience! We opened our doors on 20th August for those who needed to quarantine. We had a happy band of about 13 boys from all over the world: Korea, Bosnia, Hong Kong, China, Kazakhstan, Portugal, Russia, Serbia and Armenia. Given that we were all confined to the House and some of the School playing fields, they were amazing. We all worked together to make the time as enjoyable as possible and by the time school started in September, there were friendships made which will last a lifetime. Our ‘Lockdown Thirteen’ had a competition which ran over the whole period and included: chess, badminton, football, Jenga, Dodgeball and Karaoke. Leo, Aren and Goncalo were the victorious team! Towards the end of the Michaelmas Term, Covid cases in the UK were steadily rising and quite a few boys left early, understandably to be with their families for Christmas. Many, sadly, could not get home. Flights were cancelled, quarantine restrictions overseas were getting longer; even now as I write
