Brentwoodian 2021

89 During the February lockdown the weather predictions came true and the snow fell. For some of the boys staying with us, it was the first time they had ever seen snow and so was created the Fortress of Solitude, which stood proud on the School field long after the rest of the snow had melted. I likened the boys to a phoenix because it is the best comparison one can make. Despite everything they came through and still managed to complete the school year and many beyond expectations. Din Ammar-Tolj from Bosnia gained a full scholarship to Yale University in Connecticut and Torres Ng, our Head of House, is off to Study Geography at Cambridge. Alex Middleton won two Gold Medals (100m and 400m Relay) at the Brentwood District Athletics Competition, and many of our boys secured places at their first choice universities including Imperial, UCL and Manchester. We finished the year with our Leavers’ BBQ which culminated in a loud and somewhat tuneless rendition of Sweet Caroline! But those of you who have witnessed our Unison efforts at House Music will know, what we lack in raw talent we more than make up for in energy, passion and volume. I have been working in the boarding community for over eight years now and this quirky bunch never fails to astonish me. They descend on Hough House as strangers from all around the world and within days they are a close-knit family and like any family, we have our moments but I am pleased to say for the most part that we few, we happy few are a happy band of brothers.
