FEBRUARY 2022 JUNIOR CHESS TOURNAMENT Back in February, Brentwood School hosted the first major post-covid chess tournament in Essex which also incorporated the Brentwood School Championships. It was open to any junior players. We reached our capacity of 120 players two weeks ahead of the event. Nina Pert (Senior) and Alyssa Omoruyi (Junior) became Brentwood School champions for the first time. JUNIOR TEAM CHALLENGE Brentwood School hosted a local qualifying tournament for the Junior Team Challenge (a school chess competition for students in Years 7 and 8) and won through to the National Final in Wimbledon. Our team of Max Pert, Jaden Omoruyi, Markos Mouratidis, Yahya Ferdhaus and Rostislav Kovalev finished 3rd behind Wilson’s School and hosts, King’s College. EUROPEAN CHESS UNION CHAMPIONSHIPS JULY 2022 Nina Pert (Year 9) and Max Pert (Year 7) represented England at the European Chess Union Championships in Greece. Both played board 2 for their respective teams – Nina for the Under 18 Girls team and Max (making his international team debut) for the Under 12 Open team. The team competitions were seven rounds over seven days. The U18 Girls finished 9th overall and the U12 Open team 5th. Nina and Max also played in the individual rapid and blitz championships. Nina came 1st equal but 3rd on tiebreak in the U14 girls rapid to win a bronze medal. In a larger field, Max played above his rating to come 15th in the U12 blitz (10.5/18) and 21st in the rapid. NATIONAL UNDER 19 SCHOOL FINALS JULY 2022 Brentwood School was one of twenty schools to qualify for the National Under 19 School Finals in Stratford Upon Avon (formally the Times Championships).
