With rugby returning to some sort of normality after COVID we had high expectations for all our rugby teams in what was going to be a very challenging year. Our students did themselves and the School very proud with their hard work and determination throughout the season and we managed to get twenty teams playing rugby for the School on a regular basis every week. Here is a short summary of our season Rugby Our senior rugby season started with our annual rugby tournament where we hosted eight other schools from across the East of England. Our very inexperienced 1st XV gave a very good account of themselves by beating Coopers’ Coborn and RGS Colchester in the opening stages of the season and set us up to a good start for our National and County Cup campaign. Our aim for the season was to rebuild our senior squad after the Covid pandemic, which was always going to be difficult with only a handful of experienced Upper Sixth boys playing rugby especially against big and well-established rugby schools. Under the leadership of Matthew Reeves and Scott Davey our senior squad worked hard on and off the field of play and the signs were there that we had a good work ethic with boys turning up for regular early morning gym sessions at 6.30am. This set us up for a good run of form in our National Cup and Essex Cup campaigns. On our block circuit we could consider ourselves very unlucky as we lost a few close games that could have gone either way. During our National Cup run we secured fantastic victories over Coopers’ Coborn 29-12, Seevic College 25-12 and Eltham College 15-12, but unfortunately came unstuck 1ST XV 135
