After a gap of three years due to the pandemic Brentwood School competed in the Public School Championships led by Fencing Captain, Jack Elsworth, and Vice Captain, Carlysle Bailey. Over the three days we enjoyed many high ranking finishes with many athletes reaching far in their individual competitions. Jacob won bronze in the Junior Epée with other medalists being Folayemi who was the runner up in Senior Boys’ Sabre and Elizabeth who won bronze in the Girls’ Senior sabre. All athletes fought extremely hard with Brentwood eventually finishing 2nd in the overall combined competition, falling behind only Millfield providing a fantastic result from everyone who took part. Jack and Jacob overall in their combined weapons finished second overall, Jack in Senior Boys and Jacob in Junior Boys which was a great success for the School. Aside from success in competitions Jack, Elizabeth and Folayemi were accepted into the GBR athlete development programme consisting of the top GBR fencing athletes in the country. This is a fantastic achievement by these athletes, demonstrating the high level which they train and compete at. The development of these athletes and those in the years below show a promising future for Brentwood fencing which helps younger students to flourish in their weapons. By Jack Elsworth 86
