4 Chair’s Report Welcome to what is sadly our final issue of the magazine, having been agreed by most of our Councillors in a meeting in June that we should no longer publish our updates this way, after recommendations from our Mylander Working Group. We are still focused on letting you know what is going on locally and how we are dealing with the things that affect us in Myland and, as I mentioned in our 100th edition, as a first step our website will be updated to be easier to access what you are looking for. Looking at recent activities, we are continuing to actively support the construction of the two proposed new community centres at Kingswood Heath and Chesterwell. Plans are advancing with the necessary public consultations recently completed so that we can ensure that we get the facilities that are wanted. Thanks to those who have responded which will help shape the community centres and what they provide. In the next few months, we will start to look at our budget and plans for 24/25 and part of this, in the current climate of financial constraint within local authorities, may mean we continue to step up and provide services that other tiers of government are unable to provide outside of their statutory obligations. Our latest financial contributions have been to Colchester City Council Street Care and Safety team to support the purchase of an additional mobile CCTV unit. This is to be used in the Highwoods part of the Myland Parish, focusing on anti-social behaviour issues and littering/fly tipping on the walk from Mill Road to Via Urbis Romanae. This was deployed in early September and, although no fixed penalty notices or prosecutions have resulted to date, there has been a marked decrease in reported incidents. We have also continued to offer our financial support to the Myland Youth Club run by the YMCA, which now has an average of 30 attendees. We value the work they do to keep Myland a safe place to live. As I finish my last Chair’s report, I have to say a huge thank you to all those who have contributed regularly, to our advertisers for supporting us and to you the residents for contacting us and letting us know what you think. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank all those on our committees, both Councillors and residents, for their hard work, to Katie who has been much appreciated by me as Editor of this magazine and kept calm when I have regularly submitted reports at the last minute. Also thanks to Katherine, our Clerk, who provides necessary advice and support on the growing and diverse range of subjects we need to be aware of in order to operate and run a Parish, and to all Council members who continue to turn up every month and express their views and opinions on what matters to the them.
5 Last but not least, thanks to Herbert, our street officer, who in all weathers keeps our open spaces and streets as clear of litter as is manageable in such a huge area as well helping out with the recycling container pick up service. Having worked on several Committees over the years, I have felt lucky that Myland Community Council has had a team of councillors who have always worked together, maintaining high standards in financial management and engaging with stakeholders and the community. In every way, the council continues to exceed standards and to set the benchmark, and as a result we are recognised as highly effective by the outside bodies we come into contact with. As always, we are happy to hear your views, so you are all very welcome at our Full Council meetings which take place the last Wednesday of every month or email me or the Clerk on [email protected] Cllr Alison Jay Chair of Myland Council Chair’s Report
6 Council Reports Myland Access Committee Well, apparently this edition will be the last of the printed version of The Mylander. It is intended that a new and updated website and other social media sites will keep you informed. So, instead of looking back over the last twenty or so years, I am going to look forward to the next few years and list some of things we hope to be involved in. The bridge over the A12 at Severalls Lane was hit by a large lorry over 4 years ago, resulting in damage to the structure, such that traffic lights were required on Severalls Lane to reduce the traffic going over the bridge. A repair has now been scheduled for 2025(?) and possibly overnight closure of the A12. The significance of this is that a few hundred yards to the west of Severalls Lane Footpath 39 crosses the A12, - yes, and extremely scary it is too! www.mylandcommunitycouncil.gov.uk Myland Community Council MYLAND BOXING DAY WALK 10AM, 26TH DECEMBER MEET AT THE WAR MEMORIAL IN AID OF LOCAL CAUSES RAFFLE • REFRESHMENTS MINCE PIES • DOGS WELCOME
7 Council Reports Now with the National Highways in the vicinity repairing one bridge, could they possibly erect another one! It’s a long shot, but worth a try. As a fall back position the A12 widening from Chelmsford to Marks Tey is expected to continue from Colchester northwards – probably several years from now. Myland Community Council has already registered our interest with National Highways regarding a potential bridge over the A12. Staying in the northern part of Myland, Footpath 231 just beside the Cambian Fairview Hospital, a development of more than twenty houses is about to commence. Footpath 231 was another victim of the routing of the A12 to the north of Colchester in the 1970’s and now only runs for about one hundred yards from Boxted Road until it meets the A12. Our vision is for it to be extended through the Countryside Homes development and Chesterwell, creating a footpath running all the way around north Colchester. We will be keeping a close eye on this one. Now that the clocks have gone back it can’t be long until the Boxing Day Walk – a six (-ish) mile stroll around Myland, through High Woods Country Park, beside the Golf Course and past Chesterwell Woods. We will meet at 10am at the War Memorial on Thursday 26th December. Hope to see you there! Robert Johnstone Chair, Myland Access Committee Myland Heritage Group CHESTERWELL MIDDLE BRONZE AGE BURIALS This article is very much based on Colchester Archaeological Trust (CAT) Report 1298, with kind permission from the author Laura Pooley. The report is one of a series resulting from archaeological examination of various sites in the Chesterwell development. The archaeological work is funded by Mersea Homes, who has also given permission for use of the reports produced. The work referred to below was carried out in 2018, prior to build of residential, commercial and community buildings. From earlier site examination by geophysical survey, site walking and test trenching, two possible areas of prehistoric activity were identified. Further detailed
8 Council Reports work revealed a small Middle Bronze Age cemetery consisting of one definite and two probable cremation burial pits in a small cluster to the south—southeast of two prehistoric ring-ditches. All three burials contained the disturbed remains of cremation urns, but only one included a small quantity of cremated human bones. Carbon dating of this produced a period of 1374—1125 BC. Unfortunately no carbon dating evidence was found in the two ring ditches. Both ditches were laying extremely shallow and consequently had been damaged, “truncated” by disturbance. One ditch was not a continuous circle, having a gap or entrance in its eastern side. The other ditch formed a complete circle. Although neither had radio carbon dateable evidence, pieces of worked flint, Middle Bronze Age pottery and a small piece of later Medieval pottery was found. All three of the burial pits contained broken urns, but only one contained the cremated human bone that was carbon-dated. It is thought that the broken pieces of urns constituted three in total and are identified as being of the ‘Ardleigh Type’. Some decoration on the urn remains consisted of finger-tip impressions and a few random nail impressions on one area and small rows of fingernail impressions on other urn fragments. It is considered that as these finger and nail impressions are quite small — it is probable they were made by a woman or child, or both. It is fascinating to see the imprints of prehistoric Myland residents on the cremation urns. We might assume, if they are of a woman and child that the urn contained the remains of a husband and father. How very lucky are those archaeologists, who found the pottery, to be the first to place their fingers over those markings for over 3,000 years.
Council Reports 9 Nature Notes When I look out, the sky I see is wide and westerly. Drifting clouds add decoration and can also become a weather messenger. Beneath the sky lays a landscape with grass green paths beside hedgerows laced with dog rose flowers and honeysuckle yellow. A river meanders its course with mace that grows free as it leans with the flow of the water. Here and there purple loose strife adds splashes of colour along the river bank. I walk there, and on my return I can say I saw the red kite soaring, I heard the blackcap calling, I captured the demoiselle resting. Later, the day time sky carries a warning and that and the stirring breeze signal change. Soon enough, rain is tap-ping on the window pane and I watch rivulets run their downward race. I listen to the song of the squall through the leaves of the trees in my garden. Later, when is all calm again and the sun is warm on my shoulders I stroll in the garden and smell the lavender soothing, watch the peacock butterfly on buddleia basking. Later still, I may lay awake a while to recall the sights and sounds of the day. I hear in the distance the dog fox bark, a call of the night if ever there was. I turn to sleep then, content. Was this a dream, no, it is simply a montage of Myland mindfulness moments. I would like to take this opportunity to thank those readers who over the years have been kind enough to express their enjoyment reading my Nature Notes. More recently I am also grateful to those who have expressed their interest in the Myland history articles. The history articles appear on the MCC Website and via local Facebook groups and will continue to do so. I expect there to be future occasional natural history articles also available via those routes. Pete Hewitt for Myland Heritage Group (Nature)
10 Council Reports Community Engagement Beyond the Mylander - keeping in touch Cllr Lindsey Ilsley, Myland Community Council’s Community Engagement Lead, talks about work they’re doing to develop how the council shares news and updates and how to share your feedback and views. As this is the final edition of the Mylander it feels like a good time to tell you about work I’ve recently started to develop our communications and community outreach. Hopefully the project will inform the council’s understanding of who lives and works in Myland, and improve how we share and receive updates with you. First let me briefly introduce myself; I joined Myland Community Council earlier this year. I’ve lived in Myland for almost three years and since moving here have greatly admired the caring and commitment of our local community councillors. I feel so proud to now be part of that work. I’m currently on a career break, looking after my young family, but usually I work in the charity sector advising on how to use good communications to strengthen community and so staff can see how their amazing work makes a big difference. For me, community is vital. I grew up in a village where everyone played a part in making it a safe and happy space everyone could belong in. I’ve been passionate about community and volunteering ever since! In the coming months I’ll be finding out more about Myland, building a picture of who lives and works here. I’ll be looking at the different ways residents like to receive news and updates, and the kind of information people prioritise, want and need. This research will help us plan. It will tell us the best ways to reach you and how we can get important information to you quickly and effectively. Hopefully it will also increase councillor visibility so you know who we are, what we’re doing and how to get in touch with us when you need to. I’d love to hear from you! If you’ve feedback or views you’d like to share on how we can keep in touch, connect and engage, email: [email protected]

Churches The Well Methodist Church The Community Pantry (fortnightly) and the Warm Welcome (weekly) re-commenced in September and will continue during the school term on Tuesdays from 12noon to 4.00pm. These two activities are open to everyone. We celebrated Harvest with an All-Age Worship service at the end of September, led by our minister, Rev Chris Preece. Donations of goods for Colchester Foodbank were received at the service which was followed by a Buffet Lunch. As in times past, we invite members of the community to join us, as Christmas approaches, in supporting two local charities - St Helena Hospice and Colchester Engagement & Next Steps (formerly Colchester Night Shelter). We are collecting toiletries for the Hospice and for CENS food, such as tea, coffee, sugar, hot chocolate, UHT milk, squash, vegetable oil, gravy granules, ketchup, mayonnaise, stock cubes, salt and pepper as well as toiletries such as shampoo, conditioner, deodorant and men’s razors. Donations may be brought on any Tuesday (12noon to 4.00pm) or to our Caring Service on Sunday 24th November at 10.30am when we have a speaker telling us about the work of St Helena Hospice. Details of our Christmas celebrations will be found elsewhere in this magazine, on the Churches Together Christmas Greetings. Our own Candlelit Carol Service is on Sunday 22nd December at 4.00pm led by Rev Chris Preece and followed by light refreshments. Colchester Countryside Volunteer Rangers Sadly we said goodbye to our head Ranger Sonya who had done some amazing work over many years and was an inspiration to us all. She had decided to do some travelling and New Zealand is one of the places on her list. We wish her ‘Bon Voyage’ and good luck hopefully we will meet again at some future date. Together We Grow We also said goodbye to Richard one of our wonderful team who joined about 8 years ago as a Volunteer and then joined the Management team taking over some of the garden sessions. Very difficult to sum up Richards contribution in a few words but just to say he was a wonderful person with much experience and will be missed very much. Richard is now spending more time with his family and sure we will keep in touch. If you’d like more information, you can contact me at: [email protected] Paul Horwood

21 From inside the community Mill Road Surgery Autumn greetings from Mill Road Surgery, and this time of year brings the now familiar round of flu vaccines and covid boosters! Hopefully those who are entitled to either or both the vaccines should have had an invite already, or indeed already may have had them, as they started in early October. Vaccine clinics are running on selected Saturdays in October and November, as well as some availability with practice nurses during the week. If you haven’t yet had an invite and fit the criteria below then please let the surgery know: • are aged 65 or over • are pregnant • are aged 6 months to 64 years and have an increased risk of getting seriously ill from COVID-19 because of a health condition or treatment • live in a care home for older adults If you think you may be at increased risk due to a health condition or treatment then please first check the website below which gives you a thorough list of those who may be more at risk: Visit the NHS Covid-19 website HERE We strongly recommend patients who are eligible to get both the flu vaccine and covid booster to give you as much protection as possible during the autumn and winter months, when respiratory infections are more prevalent. This also helps to keep pressure off essential NHS services during these times when demand is also higher. Moving on, we are really sorry to hear that the 101st issue of the Mylander will be the last issue, as we’ve found it to be an invaluable source of information for our patients over the years and will be sorely missed. Every time a new issue is released I frequently get comments from patients that they’ve read it, and being local myself too, I can add myself to the list of people who will miss it! Going forward please feel free to visit our webpage for updates, information and importantly, there will be increased numbers of appointments for GP’s and Nurse/Paramedic Practitioners available to book online, to save having to call at 8am.
22
Please bookmark the page: Mill Road Surgery On the subject of online access, its well worthwhile using the NHS app and making sure you have online access to your health record, (reception can help with an online login if you haven’t registered for it before). This is also really useful when waiting for test results, if you have full access, as even over the weekend you can generally see most results such as blood tests as they come in. So finally we’d like to say thank you to Katie, the editor of The Mylander, for all her help and support to ourselves and the community over the years - you’ve done a grand job! Ashley Moore Paramedic Practitioner/Nurse Manager Women’s Institute As this is the final Mylander that will include our W.I. report, it seems appropriate to think back over many meetings that have been held first in the Methodist Church Hall, then St. Michaels Church Hall and finally in our current home, High Woods Community Centre. There is a common thread running through all the memories and that is one of deep friendships which have been formed during the years. Several that were made right at the beginning and which still exist today. There have been some tough times to contend with – not least dealing with the pandemic and all the problems associated with that. However, we survived and continue in good spirits, having welcomed some new members along the way. 23 From inside the community

25 From inside the community We are now looking forward to a new year, which we hope will bring us all a sense of peace as we enjoy more happy times together. The meetings from the last three months include a Chocolate Tasting Evening, arranged by our Committee Members. In September, Ian Anderson introduced us to the History and Natural History of Spices. In October, Angie Jones gave us an insight into the Slow Lanes of Suffolk and Essex. She set us a quiz to end her talk in which she shared photos of local places she had visited. Future evenings planned are ‘It’s all about Alpacas’, a talk by Jayne Kidger in November. For December, we shall be having lunch at the Cricketers instead of our usual evening meeting and in January, Lindsey Barrell will be presenting an intriguing talk called Burlesque, me and W.I.! We take this opportunity of wishing you all a very happy, healthy and peaceful 2025 and remember that as we face the cold days of winter, there will always be a warm welcome to be found on the first Friday of the month at the Highwoods Community Centre at 7.15pm. 27 Learning & Growing 1st Myland Guides We’re three weeks into the new term, and time has flown by! The girls have been busy working on the “Animal Athletes” UMA, where they tested their jumping, staring, and running skills, comparing themselves to various animals. This was a fun way to get everyone moving and thinking about their own abilities in a creative way. Excitingly, our unit has been chosen to help trial a new Girlguiding interest badge called “Day Tripper.” The girls have also been designing their own interest badges, with many of the designs inspired by some of the classic badges that have been recently retired, showing there’s still a strong appetite for the old favourites. Looking ahead, we’ve got an exciting term planned, including a trip to Blue Owl and our annual wide game, which is always a hit with the Guides. This term tends to be a bit more craft-focused, which everyone enjoys. Over the summer, several girls attended Hautboisfest in Norfolk, where they had a weekend full of activities. Special mention goes to Amelia, Edith and Rosie, who were comperes for the evening event! We’re also looking forward to our upcoming trip to Pleasurewood Hills, where we hope to make some Girlguiding promises on the rollercoasters – always a memorable moment! Interested in joining us? Learning & Growing Myland Pre-School CIC We returned to preschool on Monday 9th September, and we have had a good start to the new term and were very excited about starting back and welcoming all the children old and new, who have all settled in well. We said farewell to 23 children at our pre-school graduation in July and we wish them well as they take the next step in their journey at primary school. On Monday 7th October, we had a Bag to School collection to help raise much needed funds for preschool. As I write this, I do not know the weight collected or the amount raised. We have had themes of all about me, my family, my body, my senses, autumn, food and harvest throughout this half term and we will have themes of fireworks and Diwali, the armed forces and remembrance, road safety and Christmas throughout next half term. The children will be creating a harvest display in the Church for their Harvest Festival on the 13th October. We will put all our harvest donations for the Foodbank in front of our display. On Monday 11th October we have the photographer coming into preschool from Rob Sambrook photography and parent’s will then have the hard decision of which of the lovely photos they order, but they will make great Christmas presents! On Friday 18th October we are taking part in the Wear It Pink day raising funds and awareness for Breast Cancer. All the children are encouraged to wear pink and make a donation and we are holding a coffee morning from 9-11am at the Parish Halls. On Monday 11th November we will be going into St Michaels Church to hear the last post sounded for 11am for Remembrance Day. We will be having Pudsey days in the week of 11th – 15th November, where we will be wearing our Children in Need clothing or something yellow or spotty to raise funds for Children in Need. Many continue to work towards their Bronze , Silver and Gold awards. We’ve already visited Colchester Fire Station this term. The girls and leaders had a brilliant time, and huge thanks go to Red Watch for making our visit so special. We are also looking forward to exploring Indian culture while learning some Bollywood dance moves in the process. Everyone gets excited about our annual trip to the Odeon in December for a Girlguiding only screening which is always a favourite in the calendar. Both Units will be investigating Recycling week this term and in November, for our 3rd year, we will be collecting for the Colchester Food Bank giving us all the chance to put our Guiding promise into action. Seasons Greetings to all our Rainbow families, past and present. Lorraine 31

Queen Boudica Primary School I’m really sorry to note that this will be the last edition of The Mylander - thank you to everyone involved in its publication for the warm welcome that our school community always receives. We ended the last academic year with our usual mix of exciting new opportunities, combined with excellent academic outcomes in all phases of school. Well done to everyone for a year of hard work! One of the highlights was the Year 6 production of ‘The Amazing Adventures of Superstan,’ which told of the adventures of a well meaning superhero who sported a spectacular pair of gold pants! Our Year 6 pupils really took to this production, and were unstoppable in their renditions of their favourite songs, long after the performances had finished! We were all wowed by the children’s talent and were so thrilled to share in their successes. We wish the cohort every possible success and happiness as they start their secondary phase of education. Our School Council and I were delighted to be invited to visit the new Wellbeing Garden at Colchester Hospital, designed by Adam Frost. The hospital plays a key role in the lives of many of our families, and we greatly appreciate all that the NHS does to help us. 33 PIANO TUITION & MUSIC THEORY ALL AGES AND STANDARDS STUDENTS ENTERED FOR RSM IF REQUIRED TREVOR CORDWELL 01206 844087 Learning & Growing
35 Children made some beautiful bunting from pressed flowers to decorate the shelter, and we were able to have an advance ‘sneak peek’ at the garden whilst presenting our bunting to the RHS team who were finishing the planting. It’s such a beautiful space, and highly recommended for a visit if you’re passing that area. We have welcomed the new term with enthusiasm, and our Forest School sessions are already underway, both at our on-school site and at Highwoods Country Park. It’s so much fun, and the weekly sessions are very much looked forward to by pupils of all ages. Pupils in Year 6 have also been excellent ambassadors for school this term, participating in an archery competition at Thurstable School. We are really proud of them for their 4th place, out of 11 schools: well done! Finally, the newest (and probably the most-loved!) member of our school community continues to visit on a weekly basis, bringing joy to all who meet her. Poppy has settled really well into school, and has worked out very quickly where the dog treats are kept! She is such a good girl, and it’s been a real pleasure seeing the children enjoying learning to look after her. Poppy works as an Essex Therapy Dog at weekends: we’re so proud of all that she brings to our local community. We look forward to seeing you at a local event before too long - best wishes from all of us here at QBPS. Clare Woodward, Headteacher Learning & Growing
