Mylander - Issue 83

33 From inside the community Groundsman for much of my years in Mile End was Bill Everett who took considerable pride in the quality of his work. Often on Saturday afternoons he and other boys would assist Bill at full-time by getting in the corner flags and helping fold the goal nets. Bob recalls: “I played football for Myland Primary School and 1st Myland Scouts at Mile End. Full size pitches and goals, but with corners taken from the edge of the penalty box. I recall one day saving a certain goal when I headed off the line in a school match. ‘Well done that boy’ came a shout from the touchline. In truth I knew nothing about it – the shot simply hit my head! “Years later, as a Borough Councillor and Chairman of the Recreation, Tourism and Arts Committee, I vowed that I would deliver the new Pavilion which had been promised by successive Councils from my time as a Myland schoolboy footballer. And, 40 years after the first promise I was aware of, the new Pavilion was built. I had the great honour in 1997 of officially declaring it open.” Colchester High Steward, Sir Bob Russell Recycling Information From 13 April 2020, Colchester Borough Council are collecting glass, cans, plastic, paper and card on a four-weekly basis.
