Mylander - Issue 83
37 Learning & Growing 1st Myland Scout Group So, as you can imagine this has been a different and difficult time for us in Scouting at Myland. As I write this, we have missed our third week of scouting meetings. Before we closed the group, we had been busy as usual with the numbers remaining steady. We had taken in a few new members who unfortunately only managed a few weeks with us, but we are looking forward to getting back to normal. In good news, our Beaver waiting list is now back open. The group all had a great evening at Leisure world, swimming, using the flumes and having a good splash around. The Beavers have been busy learning about safety and disability, learning all about guide dogs and how to say their name in sign language. They have cooked pancakes and shown their collections and talked about their hobbies. The Cubs have had a bush tucker trail evening, completing various challenges including blindfolded food tasting, they made model rats for Chinese New Year, have learnt about being healthy and brought their collections into show and tell. We have been away to Thorrington with another group for winter camp, learning basic scouting skills. And some of the Cubs took part in a mini bash (gang show built in a day) gaining their entertainers badge. The Scouts have made structures using spaghetti and marshmallows, making it strong enough to hold an egg. They have learnt and discussed fire safety and made awareness of the Australian bush fires, have done the Athletics badge, made cookies and been on a night hike from Little Horkesley to Great Horkesley— this happened on a very wet and windy night, but in good scouting tradition they succeeded. Our plans for the future are currently on hold until this current situation has passed and we can once again enjoy scouting. I am keeping in contact with all the young people and sending out ideas for badges etc to keep them entertained. I would like to say a big thank you to all my volunteers, who like myself, are missing the hustle and bustle of the weekly meetings and extra events that scouting has to offer—without them none of this could happen.
