Mylander - Issue 85
26 From inside the community As Community Activity organiser for RA-C, I teamed up with Wayne to run this project and we were both amazed by the success of it for some people and the interest it engendered. Some people grew plants on windowsills and transplanted them to his Big Garden, others dug their garden for the fist time and yet others grew in containers on concrete. It provided something to care for, an opportunity to do something outdoors, something to eventually be proud of and indeed something healthy to eat. Via the WhatsApp group growers received Wayne’s invaluable instruction videos, shared successes and photos and friendships were initiated. People who were normally totally taken up with home and children were now in isolation but with a lifeline to other people who were doing something similar to them. A different group were able to attend weekly Zoom meetings and likewise receive advice and share experiences and become friends. Members of the group have told me of the feelings of connection and belonging the project gave them, particularly at this difficult time. It really has improved mental and physical well-being.
