Mylander - Issue 86

Learning & Growing 1st Myland Beavers, Cubs and Scouts So, as you can imagine this continues to be a difficult time for the group, with all our meetings now online. However, the groups are still continuing to have fun with fortnightly Zoom meetings. The Beavers have enjoyed scavenger hunts at home, looked at the pet’s badge, made paper aeroplanes, created a water filter, planted bulbs, made finger fudge and made Christmas advent calendars. The Cubs have enjoyed games nights, quizzes, 1-minute challenges, origami frogs, made Remembrance wreaths, cooked a cake in a mug and made reindeer poms-poms. The Scouts have cooked cakes in the microwave, made arm pit fudge, completed escape rooms together, done task master challenges and made toilet roll reindeers. We then ended the year with a whole group online Christmas party, where we played treasure hunts, family fortunes quizzes, challenges and made and sung our own Scouting version of the 12 days of Christmas. I’m pleased to report that Shaun Field, one of our scout leaders, completed his leadership training during lockdown and has earnt his wood badge. Some of our other members have also received awards; Sharon and Tony Lockwood, 2 of our committee members, received 10- year service awards, Maureen Miller, our treasurer, received the chief scout’s commendation for good service award and I, myself, received the medal for merit and my 20 years’ service award. Well done to everyone. In sad news I would like to pay our respects to Mick Brown, who sadly passed away in December. Mick was a founding member of Myland, known to many of us as Skip, he will be fondly remembered and is a legend in our group. Due to the current restrictions, we were unable to pay our respects at his funeral; however, some former and current members from Myland and across Colchester formed a scouting guard of honour for Mick outside the crematorium, saluting him as he passed us by. The group wishes to pass on our sincere condolences to Margaret and the rest of the family in our scouting terms Mick has now ‘Gone home’ and will be missed incredibly. 33
