Mylander - Issue 86
Learning & Growing We met once this term in person when Girlguiding rules allowed, and played social distanced games on the rec and really enjoyed seeing each other again after so long, and in spite of the rain we were adamant we would not cancel! Unfortunately we didn’t actually “see” each other for the whole meeting, as it got dark so early and the evening was finished with torch light. Really proud of our Brownies, their parents and of course our dedicated leaders, who have all shown so much flexibility and resilience in these difficult times. Bring on 2021! Brown Owl - 2nd Myland Brownies 2nd Myland Guides Well, just like everyone else, 2nd Myland Guides meeting came to an end abruptly during March. Of course, then we thought it was just going to be for a few weeks, but by the summer it was decided that we needed to get back to Guides and to try to make the girls (and leaders) lives more normal. But how? One of our Leaders was unable to attend each week because of a change in her shift patterns. Jax could, because of working from home, on screens all day and still helping at another Guide Unit was only able to offer to do bi-weekly; Katie & Celine could do each weeks but there had to be two leaders present at each meeting! Esther, although long retired from face to face Guiding had helped with Gift Aid and some administrative work, offered to come back and help Jax. So, in September we went back to meeting each week, using Zoom (they kindly donated full free Zoom accounts to Girlguiding units). It was wonderful meeting up again, it’s not the same, but we have, with the most amazing support from our parents and technology, “done our best”. We have tried to stick to the usual Guiding calendar, so during September the girls decorated their own harvest box and collected food for the “Foodbank” as we knew there wouldn’t be a Harvest Festival. Jax collected the boxes from each girls home and delivered them to the Foodbank in Colchester. Our families collected enough to feed five families. 37
