Mylander Issue 87
Council Reports Finding out about events, activities and services in Myland We want to make sure that our residents find out about activities and services, so we asked how they find out local information. The top sources were: • Community Facebook groups; • The Mylander; • Friends or word of mouth; • MCC Facebook page; • MCC website. Survey report conclusion and recommendations The report has helped the Council understand how to communicate with residents more effectively. On the one hand, it has an important role to play in signposting people to services or support – e.g. those seeking mental health support or helping publicise local organisations that have expertise in a sector. The second important use of messaging is to tackle complex issues that may take time to resolve, for example, where external organisations may be involved (such as Essex County Council for highways). The Council also has an important role to play in strengthening community bonds in an expanding area. The data on participation in different community activities demonstrated the popularity of recreational activities, leisure & sports clubs, community groups (Guides, Scouts etc) and social groups / coffee mornings. This reinforces the importance of ensuring there are accessible community facilities and equipment, especially as restrictions ease. The Council also has an important role to play in strengthening an inclusive community. Given the importance placed on issues around mental health / social isolation, sources of support can be publicised, as well as training for community members (e.g., Mental Health First Aid training). Residents will also benefit from the Myland Hopper bus that will help them stay connected – even if they don’t have access to a car. The Hate Crime Awareness Ambassador training undertaken by several councillors also underscores a commitment to an inclusive community where all are valued. 15
