Mylander Issue 87
Learning & Growing Children currently at North, were particularly thrilled to learn first-hand from former pupils, about school life in the past, including from the oldest former pupil, Margaret Gilbert. Margaret, 104, sharedmemories of her time at school in the 1920s and photos of her mother’s school days in the 1900s. Along the way, all the children in the school were involved in asking questions, making decisions and sharing their research. Two permanent artworks have been created by local artists Nicola Burrell and Lisa Temple-Cox to continue these conversations, along with an archive in the school and new oral histories deposited at the Essex Record Office. The CXXV book compiles many morememories from the school’s history and project activities, along with short articles written by our partners Colchester Recalled, Lexden History Group and Sir Bob Russell, High Steward of Colchester. Even without a connection to the school there are fascinating glimpses into Colchester life in the past; from buying penny buns from Stowe’s bakery, and the show and tell of moon rock in 1969, to daily life of a 21st century school. There are more stories and a timeline of the school’s history on the project website along with ordering details for the book: CLICK HERE Books are also available from Red Lion Books and Firstsite art gallery when they re-open.
