Mylander - Issue 88
35 Learning & Growing 1st Myland Guides This time last year, we never thought for a moment that we would still be meeting via Zoom in May 2021, but this is the world we live in and as ever Girlguiding has had to adapt. Having said this, there have been benefits to meeting on Zoom; we’ve had lots of visitors to our meetings that due to location we would never usually have been able to have. Our visitors this year have been Jumping Clay, where we each made a clay model of ourselves (either as a leader or a Guide) – the lady is based in Lancashire, so again a win for Zoom. We had a Harry Potter tour, visiting all the filming locations and inspiration spots for JK Rowling. In addition to this we have had a visitor from Girlguiding Norfolk and the Arc Centre, which houses archives of Girlguiding such as uniform, handbooks and badges. The girls learnt all about Guides and what they did when it started. We have combined these visits with two Time Traveller badges, so even though we’ve been meeting virtually it hasn’t stopped the age-old tradition of earning badges. The reason we have been working on Time Travelling and archives, is because 1st Myland Guides celebrated their very special 100th Birthday this month. This is 100 years of our unit being in existence, with no breaks and even meeting in the same location. As you can imagine as leaders, we’re extremely proud of this. To celebrate, our girls made their own scones, jam and even butter over Zoom and we enjoyed our own afternoon tea together. I’m also very proud to say that the girls have been amazing at earning interest badges over the past year. I don’t think we’ve ever awarded as many as we have over this past year. Congratulations 1st Myland Guides! Lizzy Steward – 1st Myland Guides
