MakeLunch: Myland opened every Thursday through the summer holidays at the Myland Parish Halls. Each week we provided free hot and healthy meals for local families along with crafts, badge making, indoor and outdoor games and face and nail painting. Over the holidays we welcomed 25 children and their families from the Myland area and most of these joined us quite regularly throughout the summer. We served a total of 101 meals to our guests as well as sending them all away with extra portions for older children at home or for meals the next day. The project was supported by over 20 volunteers made up of members of local churches and the Myland Community Council. Our County Councillor, Anne Turrell, also visited several times. We were really pleased to welcome all the families who came along and about two thirds of our guests’ meals were served to children and adults from families who would qualify for free school meals in term-time. In many different ways we know that MakeLunch was a special and enjoyable time for our guests and volunteers, who by the end of the summer began to feel like one big family! Everyone enjoyed the food and activities and loved making new friends. One of our mum’s told us it was the ‘highlight’ of her holiday. The Future The Make- Lunch team are currently reviewing the summer pilot to see what improvements could be made. We are hoping to be running the project again in summer 2018. As we prepare for this we will be talking to local schools about working together to ensure families are aware of the MakeLunch club and are able to access it. We will also be exploring possibilities for the right venue, which will allow for easy food preparation, provide good space for activities and be well positioned for visitors. Makelunch: Myland (Colchester) - Summer 2017 Free school meals make a huge difference to 1.2 million children in the UK but when schools are closed so are the kitchens… MakeLunch is a network of churches working to fill the holiday h unger gap.
