From inside the community Women’s Institute As we look forward at the start of another year, we recall the last three months of our W.I. meetings. Our committee had quite a challenge for our November meeting when Edinburgh Woollen Mills had to cancel the planned Fashion Show at the very last minute. Our amazing committee managed to book David Webb, an actor who had appeared in Hi-de-Hi! Some members had heard him speak at another W.I. meeting earlier in the year so knew that he would give us a very entertaining talk with slides and video footage of his time working on this popular show. He did not disappoint! Our December meeting took the form of a Christmas Lunch at The Cricketers, which was thoroughly enjoyed by everyone. There was even a slight covering of snow which set the scene for us. The following week two of our members attended the W.I. Carol Service, which was held in Chelmsford Cathedral. It certainly helped them to feel ready for Christmas as they joined in singing Carols and listened to songs performed by a female soloist, Nancy May, and a delightful couple of songs provided by Elmwood Primary School’s KS2 Choir. The first meeting of 2024 was a slide show given by Liz Huxley. She had some beautiful photos of various birds and other wildlife, which can be found on the Essex coastal marshes in winter. A quote from her website states; “I share beautiful images of God’s amazing creation. He puts it there and I just press the camera shutter”. Our next three meetings will start in February with a Film Show by John Jones – always a very popular event—in March, Dawn and David King will be talking about the Headgate Theatre and in April, Oliver Wright will be speaking about the Hearing Care Centre. Hopefully these events will have whetted your appetite to join us. We do welcome everyone and have always got space for new members. Just come along to High Woods Community Centre on the first Friday of each month at 7.15pm. Don’t be shy - you would be SO welcome! Sandra Jones 16
