THE BIG PITCH 10 | Professor Stephen Powis National Medical Director of NHS England & NHS Improvement and Professor of Renal Medicine at University College London Professor Stephen Powis is the National Medical Director of NHS England and NHS Improvement. In this role he is the most senior doctor within the National Health Service in England. His senior management team includes England’s Chief Pharmaceutical Officer, Chief Dental Officer, Chief Scientific Officer and Chief Allied Health Professions Officer as well as the NHS National Director of Patient Safety, the Medical Director for Primary Care, the Medical Director for Professional Leadership and Clinical Effectiveness and the Medical Director for Acute Care and Emergency Preparedness. As National Medical Director, he is the highest-level Responsible Officer within England. His medical directorate is also responsible for commissioning the national clinical audit programme, developing professional standards for doctors throughout England and developing clinical policy for the NHS. Professor Powis is executive lead for the NHS national cardiovascular disease, respiratory disease, stroke and prevention programmes. He leads the medical workforce work stream of the NHS People Plan. At the request of the Prime Minister he is currently undertaking a review of the core publicly reported English NHS clinical access standards. At the request of the Secretary of State for Health and Social Care, he and the Chief Pharmaceutical Officer recently completed a review of the barriers to access of cannabis derived medicinal products. He is the senior responsible officer for the human health work stream of the UK government’s antimicrobial resistance strategy. He co-chairs the National Quality Board with the Chief Inspector of Hospitals. Dr Tim Ferris Director of Transformation, NHS England and NHS Improvement Dr Tim Ferris is the inaugural National Director of Transformation at NHS England and NHS Improvement. The Transformation Directorate draws together NHSX, NHS Improvement, and Innovation into a single team to deliver transformation in the NHS through redesigning care services, harnessing the power of data and analytics, and building a learning health system that generates knowledge to improve population health. These activities are focused on the twin priorities of pandemic recovery and reducing health inequalities. Tim was most recently CEO of the Mass General Physicians Organization (2017-2021) and was formerly the Senior Vice President for Population Health at Mass General Brigham overseeing performance for one of the largest accountable care organizations in the US. He founded the Center for Population Health, which reaches over one million patients annually, focusing on prevention and data to improve health, reduce inequities and save lives. Tim’s past roles include multiple committees at the National Academy of Medicine, an independent advisory council for the U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services, and as a Non-Executive Director on the Board of NHS England and NHS Improvement. Tim trained in medicine and public health at Harvard University, and remains on the staff of Mass General. He was awarded numerous NIH and foundation grants and co-authored over 130 publications on health care quality measurement, health disparities and health IT. Tim became a professor at Harvard Medical School in 2018 and continues as an adjunct Professor.
