The Big Pitch - NHS Clinical Entrepreneur Programme 2022

THE BIG PITCH 12 | Clinical Entrepreneurs: Pitchers and Panellists Saif Ahmad Health and Academic Consultant Clinical Oncologist and Co-Founder 52 North Saif Ahmad is an MD-PhD cancer clinician and researcher based at the University of Cambridge. In 2018, Saif co-founded 52 North Health, a Cambridge-based start-up which is developing ‘NeutroCheck’: a novel, point-of-care medical device that aims to transform the management of patients receiving anticancer chemotherapy. The NeutroCheck device uses finger-prick blood to accurately identify patients at risk of lifethreatening neutropenic sepsis – a condition that kills two to three patients per day in England alone. NeutroCheck has the potential to improve the clinical outcomes of cancer patients and reduce the emergence of antibiotic resistance, whilst also saving healthcare providers, such as the NHS, tens of millions of pounds by preventing unnecessary emergency admissions. NeutroCheck has been supported by a number of grants including Innovate UK, and in 2020 it was awarded £1 million from SBRI Healthcare to work with NHS Trusts, Macmillan Cancer Support and the UK Sepsis Trust to support clinical trials and adoption. www.52north.health Email: [email protected] Twitter: @saifahmad_uk Christopher Law Medical Student and Co-Founder of Apian Chris is a trainee doctor at Barts and a Biomedical Engineer graduate from Imperial.
