6 | THE BIG PITCH Foreword Welcome to the NHS Clinical Entrepreneur Programme Big Pitch event. This evening, we aim to showcase and celebrate the achievements of our Clinical Entrepreneurs over the past year and welcome our newest cohort of over 200 budding innovators. To date, the team has supported over 1,000 Clinical Entrepreneurs, including doctors, nurses, dentists, healthcare scientists, midwives, allied health professionals, pharmacists, and non-clinical staff, to develop and scale innovative solutions that address the healthcare challenges facing our society. It is remarkable and inspiring to see this diverse community of innovators, creative thinkers, and problem solvers continuing to grow and produce revolutionary ideas and solutions that can positively impact our health service. I would like to thank everyone who is involved in the programme for their great contribution to the transformation of patient care and improvement of services within the NHS. Professor Sir Stephen Powis National Medical Director, NHS England As this year of the NHS Clinical Entrepreneur Programme comes to an end, I would like to congratulate each Clinical Entrepreneur in cohort 7 on their achievements, and personally welcome cohort 8 to this prestigious programme. Empowering NHS staff to develop and spread innovative and effective solutions is vital to addressing the big challenges facing the NHS and delivering our key priorities to improve care and outcomes for patients. With the support and guidance provided through the NHS Clinical Entrepreneur programme, it is inspiring to see so many of our frontline staff generating ideas that directly aim to optimise patient care and service delivery. I look forward to seeing the continued positive impact that the Clinical Entrepreneurs will bring this year. Amanda Pritchard Chief Executive Officer, NHS England
| 7 I am delighted to welcome the new cohort of Clinical Entrepreneurs to the programme and offer my congratulations to those that have taken part this past year. I am impressed by the diversity of ideas coming forward through the programme and to see so many of our staff stepping forward to offer solutions to the challenges we face in health and care. This year, I am delighted to launch the Patient Entrepreneur Programme. We know that co-producing what we do with patients creates innovations which make a meaningful difference in patients’ lives. Harnessing the insight, experience, and ideas, from both our staff and patients, we will be better equipped to deliver the progress we want to see in our NHS. I would like to wish all of the Clinical and Patient Entrepreneurs the very best of luck in their journeys and look forward to seeing their progress with support from the programme. Dr Vin Diwakar Interim National Director of Transformation, NHS England This programme, now in its eighth year, enables entrepreneurs and creative thinkers to pursue their innovation within the health service, without having to leave their clinical roles. It provides a supportive community of like-minded individuals who share a common vision of transforming healthcare through innovation. Over the past few years, the need to embrace a culture of innovation in the NHS has been amplified especially in the face of unprecedented challenges and demands. We are delighted to see the Clinical Entrepreneurs progressing along the innovation pipeline and having a strong presence in applications to our later-stage innovation programmes, such as the Small Business Research Initiative (SBRI) and NHS Innovation Accelerator (NIA). These programmes aim to build strong innovative foundations for the future of the NHS, by scaling up and spreading evidence-based solutions that can improve patient outcomes and efficiency. Congratulations to everyone who have completed their year on the programme and thank you for your commitment and contribution to the NHS. I look forward to seeing how our NHS workforce can continue to play a vital role in making the NHS the most innovative healthcare system in the world. Verena Stocker Interim CEO of the Accelerated Access Collaborative and Director of Innovation, Research, Life Sciences and Transformation Strategy at NHS England
8 | THE BIG PITCH Synergy - The Value of the CEP Network Synergy – the interaction or co-operation of two or more organisations, substances, or other agents to produce a combined effect greater than the sum of their separate effects. Today we celebrate eight years of the NHS Clinical Entrepreneur Programme. This evening you will see and hear from our community of inspiring innovators, who have been empowered to identify and distil problems, create solutions, and deliver change within our healthcare system. You will also meet many of our crosssector mentors, supporters and partners. Together they create a synergistic network for transformational change in the NHS. There are three essential components to our network: Innovators: The peer-to-peer support from entrepreneurs both past and present accelerates learning and creates collaboration across shared challenges. Mentors: Over 200 cross-sector commercial mentors give their time freely to help our Clinical Entrepreneurs go from idea to start-up, to scale-up. Partners: More than 60 organisations provide resources, opportunities, and time for the benefit of our Clinical Entrepreneurs. From industry and commercial organisations to NHS trusts, universities and charities – all dedicated to transforming patient experience and healthcare through innovation. Together this network has helped drive the CEP to become the world’s largest entrepreneurial workforce development programme in healthcare. In addition to over 1,000 NHS staff joining the programme, tens of millions of patients and professionals are already benefitting from the innovations created and between them our clinical entrepreneurs have raised hundreds of millions in funding to drive forward transformation in patient care. True synergy does even more than this though. We have also welcomed Clinical Entrepreneurs from Northern Ireland, Scotland, Wales and the Republic of Ireland and the Australian Government has also established the Australian Clinical Entrepreneur Program. We are also continuing to grow our partnership with the Venture Studio from Crisis, whose mission is to accelerate the end of homelessness for good through entrepreneurship. Finally, and perhaps most importantly this year we launch our Patient Entrepreneur Programme – now we can truly co-design the future of healthcare together. We would not have achieved all this without our network, and I would like to personally thank every individual and organisation who has helped contribute to the success of the NHS CEP. True synergy occurs when 1 + 1 = >2 and I hope you will agree that the CEP network has certainly delivered that. Professor Tony Young OBE National Clinical Lead for Innovation, NHS England, Professor of Innovation and Entrepreneurship, Anglia Ruskin University, Consultant Urological Surgeon, and Associate Medical Director, Mid and South Essex NHS Foundation Trust
| 9 The Clinical Entrepreneur Programme (CEP) is a unique initiative that empowers clinicians to turn their ideas into reality. Since 2016, the CEP has grown into a vibrant network of over 1,000 innovators, who are supported by a diverse range of partners from charity, industry, patient groups and mentors. As the Co-Clinical Lead for the past two years, it has been humbling to witness the amazing achievements of our Clinical Entrepreneurs (CEs). The CEP is more than a platform for innovation, it is a catalyst for change. Our CEs are tackling some of the most pressing challenges in healthcare, from improving access and quality, to reducing costs and inequalities. They are also creating new pathways and opportunities for themselves and others, as they develop their skills, networks, and careers. The CEP’s sister programme, InSites, supports the adoption and scaling of innovations across the NHS, while our Patient Entrepreneur Programme pilot, will welcome, for the first time, Patient Entrepreneurs to our growing community. The impact of the CEP has been recognised and validated by research, published this year, which showed that the CEP is a conducive environment for physicians to innovate and retains talent within the NHS. It also revealed how entrepreneurial behaviours can alter an individual’s professional career trajectory. Some of our alumni have become serial entrepreneurs and influential leaders within the NHS. As we enter our eighth year, we are proud of the culture of innovation, collaboration and entrepreneurship fostered by the programme. We believe that the CEP is not just a programme, but a community of change-makers. We are thrilled to welcome our newest cohort to the programme, to join us in transforming healthcare for the benefit of all. Dr Tamsin Holland Brown Paediatrician, Founder Of Hear Glue Ear and Co-Clinical Lead for the NHS England Clinical Entrepreneur Programme This programme has been a once in a lifetime opportunity, and as a direct result, I have grown personally and professionally in ways I never thought possible.
10 | THE BIG PITCH NHS Clinical Entrepreneur Programme Network Northern Ireland “Recognising the success of the NHS (Clinical Entrepreneur Programme) CEP nationally, Invest Northern Ireland in 2022 committed funding for up to March 2026 to enable 10 HSC NI staff per annum to participate in the NHS CEP. The programme is supported locally by HIRANI, delivered by Anglia Ruskin University and is part of the NHS Accelerated Access Collaborative. Over the past two years we have welcomed the NHS CEP Pitstop to Northern Ireland which has allowed all participants to gain an understanding of the Northern Ireland Life and Health Sciences ecosystem and meet with founders and companies. In June 2023 Invest NI, in partnership with HIRANI, hosted the second NHS CEP Pitstop to Northern Ireland. Led by Professor Tony Young, over 60 Clinical Entrepreneurs joined us for a range of talks, workshops, and networking with innovators from the Northern Ireland life and health sciences ecosystem. Through the NHS CEP, local entrepreneurs have accelerated their innovative ideas, resulting in collaborative connections to scale health innovation, securing further investment in Northern Ireland. As we look forward to the coming year, we will welcome the third NHS CEP Pitstop to Northern Ireland in Autumn 2024 and continue to build on momentum established with this key programme for the future of the sector.” X: @HIRANIhealth / @InvestNI
| 11 Venture Studios from Crisis “We’re delighted to be entering the third year of our partnership with the Clinical Entrepreneur Programme. From February 2022, where Venture Studio entrepreneurs were the first group of people from outside the NHS to enrol on the programme, our collaboration with CEP has gone from strength to strength. Now, eight of our entrepreneurs have now proudly joined the CEP. In providing access to opportunities, innovative learning, and network of fellow Clinical Entrepreneurs, the CEP breaks down the barriers that too often exclude people with lived experience of homelessness from entrepreneurship and to succeed in bringing their ideas to life. For Crisis, this work is integral to our mission; providing our founders with the freedom to explore opportunities to elevate their businesses and reach their potential – with dignity and pride.” Liz Choonara Director of Commerce and Enterprise, Crisis www.crisis.org.uk/venturestudio LinkedIn: /company/venture-studio-from-crisis/ X: /VSfromCrisis Scotland “The Digital Health & Innovation Centre (DHI), in partnership with Scottish Enterprise and NHS Scotland, are embarking on a third year with the NHS Clinical Entrepreneur Programme. By bringing together all the key organisations across the Scottish health and care landscape we have been able to coordinate and focus our efforts in supporting Clinical Entrepreneurs and recognising and investing in talented people who can actively contribute to improving and transforming our health and care services for the better. By linking this programme with other national clinical leadership programmes in Scotland we are seeking to create an environment where, leadership, entrepreneurship and clinical excellence can thrive and grow. Partnering with the CEP is one way that we can provide a supportive and enabling environment to assist our entrepreneurs to achieve their full potential and expand their horizons.” Professor George Crooks Chief Executive Officer, Digital Health & Care Innovation Centre www.dhi-scotland.com X: @dhiscotland

In addition to this, and to best support the development of Irish Clinical Entrepreneurs, the Irish government through the Department of Health, the Department of Enterprise, Trade and Employment, Enterprise Ireland, and the Health Service Executive have partnered with the NHS Clinical Entrepreneur Programme (CEP). This opportunity afforded to the Irish representatives on the CEP will expedite their product and commercial development through world leading training, access to investors and commercial experts, and to grow an exceptional network of peer entrepreneurs, and business and clinical leaders. | 13 Patient Entrepreneur Programme “We are extending a warm welcome to our Patient Entrepreneur Cohort this year. Patients and carers with lived experience of health conditions and using health services understand real world challenges and bring a unique perspective to identify innovative solutions to the issues that they, and many others, face in healthcare. We are excited to be sharing the benefits of the NHS CEP with a patient cohort for the first time and we have been delighted by the response to the 2024/25 pilot. Our Patient Entrepreneur cohort will receive the same educational content, support and access to resources as Clinical Entrepreneurs, but will also receive additional support from the Patient and Public involvement team in the Innovation, Research and Life Sciences unit at NHS England. We’re aiming to give participants insight into how the many areas of the NHS fit together and how they can grow their innovation, as well as demonstrate the benefit of patient-led innovations and encourage collaborative learning.” Alice Williams Head of Patient & Public Involvement Sophie Parslow Patient & Public Involvement Manager https://nhscep.com/pep/ [email protected] The NHS CEP is a unique opportunity, providing exceptional networking possibilities, access to prominent business leaders, and a wealth of educational lectures.
