THE BIG PITCH 8 | Innovation in a Time of Challenge The last year has posed a series of challenges to our health service that provide us with a unique opportunity to utilise innovation as a catalyst to deliver radical, positive changes to patient care. Looking forward, perhaps the greatest issues we face relate to the workforce, reboot and recovery, health inequalities, net zero, implementing the NHS Long Term Plan and cost efficiencies. How can we address all these through innovation? This evening you will hear and see many ideas and innovations, however the successful ones all share some common features: Novelty: Whilst an innovation may be a new technological invention within a field, it may also be an existing piece of technology or process which has a novel application or is new to a particular environment. Value: The added value to the innovation’s particular area of interest should be defined both clinically and financially. Scalability: The innovation must have the potential to be adopted across multiple sites in our healthcare system (and even globally). Empowerment: The innovation must provide additional opportunities or information that previously were not available to either patients and their caregivers or the clinical team. In short it must empower them. By keeping these four features at the forefront of our thinking, we can truly transform patient care through innovation. The NHS workforce have always been at the forefront of innovation. As the NHS looks to celebrate its 75th year we need our workforce to step forward again and help address the grand challenges the health service now faces to help launch it into its next 75 years.
