THE BIG PITCH 6 | Foreword Welcome to our NHS Clinical Entrepreneur Programme Big Pitch event. The aim of this evening is to acknowledge and celebrate some of the excellent accomplishments that our Clinical Entrepreneurs have achieved this year and to welcome the new year seven cohort of nearly 200 Clinical Entrepreneurs. We are all aware of the challenges that lie ahead for the NHS as demand continues to rise and as we continue to recover from the pandemic. However, challenging times can often bring opportunities for change through necessity. We have seen in recent times the positive impact innovation can have when we come together to address the most difficult of problems. To see so many of our workforce continue to step forward with novel ideas and solutions to improve our patients’ experience of the NHS is truly inspiring. The programme has now recruited over 1000 Clinical Entrepreneurs. Each bring their own unique insight, experience, and expertise to any problem they see. This programme embraces those different approaches and supports our Clinical Entrepreneurs to succeed in their ambitions to deliver continual improvements in the services we provide. Professor Sir Stephen Powis National Medical Director, NHS England Congratulations to all the Clinical Entrepreneurs that have completed this year’s programme. The NHS is globally renowned for the excellence, passion and dedication of its workforce and for its long history of ingenuity and creativity. With the NHS celebrating its 75th year, it is wonderful to see so many of our frontline staff continuing in this tradition, seeking to drive positive change in the way we deliver care with the support of the programme. My welcome also to the new cohort of clinical entrepreneurs starting this year , I look forward to seeing how together we can continue to improve and transform patient care and services. Amanda Pritchard Chief Executive Officer, NHS England This is a fantastic programme that continues to be a key driver to retaining talented and influential clinicians within the NHS.

| 7 It is wonderful to be back celebrating another year of the Clinical Entrepreneur Programme. I have had the pleasure of being involved with the programme for many years now and it is truly fantastic to see so many innovations develop from an initial idea to making a real impact in the NHS. We are now regularly seeing products and services developed on the programme progress through the innovation pipeline to market launch and adoption in the NHS. Clinical Entrepreneur innovations are now a consistent presence in applications to our later-stage innovation programmes, such as the AI Award, Small Business Research Initiative (SBRI) and the NHS Innovation Accelerator (NIA), and are also attaining places on national frameworks. The NHS Clinical Entrepreneur Programme, the biggest entrepreneurial workforce development programme of its kind, supports the NHS workforce to develop, evaluate and drive innovation on the frontline. Through this programme, our NHS workforce can play a vital role in making the NHS the most innovative healthcare system in the world. Congratulations to all those that have participated in the programme this year and I’m excited to see what next year brings for the new cohort and those that continue to be part of the programme. Matt Whitty Director of Innovation, Research and Life Sciences at NHS England and Chief Executive of the Accelerated Access Collaborate (AAC) at NHS England I am delighted to welcome the new cohort of Clinical Entrepreneurs and congratulate those that have completed their year on the programme. Transforming the NHS is more crucial than ever for us to deliver on our ambition to provide the best possible care to patients. Having a workforce that has excellent digital, technical, and commercial skills is vital to this transformation. Not only do we need to bring the best innovations from across the globe into the NHS, but we also need to identify the most promising innovations coming from inside the NHS itself. You all, our Clinical Entrepreneurs past and present, have an important role to play in this journey. I am looking forward to seeing the positive impact that your innovations, developed on the programme, will bring to our patients and staff. Dr Tim Ferris National Director of Transformation at NHS England An amazing programme for anyone who sees entrepreneurial opportunities in healthcare to enhance patient care.

THE BIG PITCH 8 | Innovation in a Time of Challenge The last year has posed a series of challenges to our health service that provide us with a unique opportunity to utilise innovation as a catalyst to deliver radical, positive changes to patient care. Looking forward, perhaps the greatest issues we face relate to the workforce, reboot and recovery, health inequalities, net zero, implementing the NHS Long Term Plan and cost efficiencies. How can we address all these through innovation? This evening you will hear and see many ideas and innovations, however the successful ones all share some common features: Novelty: Whilst an innovation may be a new technological invention within a field, it may also be an existing piece of technology or process which has a novel application or is new to a particular environment. Value: The added value to the innovation’s particular area of interest should be defined both clinically and financially. Scalability: The innovation must have the potential to be adopted across multiple sites in our healthcare system (and even globally). Empowerment: The innovation must provide additional opportunities or information that previously were not available to either patients and their caregivers or the clinical team. In short it must empower them. By keeping these four features at the forefront of our thinking, we can truly transform patient care through innovation. The NHS workforce have always been at the forefront of innovation. As the NHS looks to celebrate its 75th year we need our workforce to step forward again and help address the grand challenges the health service now faces to help launch it into its next 75 years. Professor Tony Young OBE National Clinical Lead for Innovation NHS England, Director of Innovation and Entrepreneurship Anglia Ruskin University, Consultant Urological Surgeon and Associate Medical Director Mid and South Essex NHS Foundation Trust Dr Tamsin Holland Brown Paediatrician, Founder Of Hear Glue Ear and Co-Clinical Lead for the NHS England Clinical Entrepreneur Programme

| 9 Health Education England Health Education England (HEE) is the national body responsible for the education and training of the healthcare workforce in England. On the 1st April 2023 we will merge into the new NHS England. Although our name is changing our responsibilities will remain. Our aim is to support the delivery of excellent healthcare and health improvement to the patients and public of England by ensuring that there are right numbers of the workforce for today and the future with the skills, values and behaviours, at the right time and in the right place. Advances in medicine, technology and digitisation are having a significant impact on the expectations and roles of those working in the system. We all expect our health workforce, especially clinicians to deliver high quality safe care which is underpinned by digital technologies. We also expect our professionals to drive innovations in all aspects of their practice and the health service. We are supporting our workforce by creating an education and training system that is evidence based and underpinned by digital and innovation. We also need to help build the capacity and capability of our current and future workforce to embrace and actively engage with research, digital and innovation. That is why we are so supportive of the NHS England Clinical Entrepreneur programme. This programme has now helped over 1000 frontline NHS staff to develop commercial skills, knowledge and experience to help transform patient care through innovation. By working with commercial mentors and gaining industry experience they are also increasing their digital and technology readiness. There are many new and growing opportunities to utilise digital technologies in the delivery of education for our future workforce and we look forward to working with our Clinical entrepreneurs and seeing the cutting-edge products from the programme that continue to push the boundaries of innovation and challenge us to explore the possible. As a working mother the CEP is relatively flexible and still allows me to pursue my career aspirations and innovations alongside holding down my role as a mother to young children. That is incredibly valuable.

THE BIG PITCH 10 | NHS Clinical Entrepreneur Programme Expansion Northern Ireland “Following a pilot of the Clinical Entrepreneur Programme in 2021/22, Invest Northern Ireland committed to funding the CEP for a further three years. The programme is supported locally by HIRANI, delivered by Anglia Ruskin University and is part of the NHS Accelerated Access Collaborative. The CEP allows HSC staff, students studying healthcare degrees and postgraduate students in health related disciplines to develop on an innovative idea over a 12 month period which will benefit the wider patient and staff community throughout the HSC NI and NHS. In October 2022 Invest NI, in partnership with HIRANI, hosted the first NHS CEP Pitstop to Northern Ireland. The Pitstop, which was led by Professor Tony Young, was a two-day event which included engagement with local companies and stakeholders. Over 50 Clinical Entrepreneurs joined us for a range of talks, workshops and networking with innovators from the Northern Ireland life and health sciences ecosystem. Through the CEP, local entrepreneurs accelerated their innovative ideas, resulting in collaborative connections to scale health innovation, securing further investment in Northern Ireland. As we look to the coming year and reflect on established momentum the CEP cohort will return to Northern Ireland in June 2023.” www.hira-ni.com/news/the-nhs-clinical-entrepreneurprogramme @HIRANIhealth @InvestNI

| 11 Venture Studios from Crisis “Our partnership with the Clinical Entrepreneur Programme began in February 2022 with four Venture Studio entrepreneurs (Chantal, Joana, Laura & Maame Esi) pitching their innovation to Professor Tony Young before joining the sixth cohort of the programme and being selected from a pool of over 300 applicants. In doing so they became one the first group of people from outside the NHS to enrol on the programme. With access to 12 months of innovative learning, tools to support the development of ideas and a network of clinical entrepreneurs, the CEP was identified as an ideal opportunity for founders who had established an early-stage business idea.” Liz Choonara Interim Director of Enterprise and Innovation, Crisis www.crisis.org.uk/venturestudio LinkedIn:/company/venture-studio-from-crisis/ Twitter: /VSfromCrisis Scotland “The Digital Health & Innovation Centre (DHI), in partnership with Scottish Enterprise and NHS Scotland, are embarking on a second year with the NHS Clinical Entrepreneur Programme. Targeted at NHS employees from across NHS Scotland, Scottish Enterprise has funded 12 places on this year’s CEP. The DHI is leading the Scottish coordination group for the programme in collaboration with Scottish Enterprise, NHS Education Scotland, Scottish Health and Industry Partnership Group (SHIP), InnoScot Health and Scottish Government. The coordination group will support the Scottish candidates in their innovation journey and help them to identify Scottish support while providing networking and collaboration opportunities into the wider Scottish innovation and entrepreneurial landscape. By bringing together all the key organisations across the Scottish health and care landscape we have been able to coordinate and focus our efforts in supporting clinical entrepreneurs and recognising and investing in talented people who can actively contribute to improving and transforming our health and care services for the better. Partnering with the CEP is one way that we can provide a supportive and enabling environment to assist our entrepreneurs to achieve their full potential.” Professor George Crooks OBE Chief Executive Officer Digital Health & Care Innovation Centre, Scotland

THE BIG PITCH 12 | Republic of Ireland “The three Clinical Entrepreneurs appointed from the Republic of Ireland were winners of the Health Innovation Hub Ireland’s Clinical Innovation Award programme 2022. They received funding from Enterprise Ireland to explore the commercial opportunity of their innovative projects to solve unmet needs in healthcare at a global scale. In addition to this, and to best support the development of Irish Clinical Entrepreneurs, the Irish government through the Department of Health, the Department of Enterprise, Trade and Employment, Enterprise Ireland, and the Health Service Executive have partnered with the Clinical Entrepreneur Programme. This opportunity afforded to the Irish representatives on the CEP will expedite their product and commercial development through world leading training, access to investors and commercial experts, and to grow an exceptional network of peer entrepreneurs, and business and clinical leaders. It is important that solutions developed by those who know and deal with the problems on a daily basis are given the best opportunity to succeed and deliver novel treatments to those who need them most.” Dr Steven Griffin Clinical Innovation Programme Manager Health Innovation Hub Ireland Dr Tanya Mulcahy National Director Health Innovation Hub Ireland https://hih.ie/ At a time of unprecedented strain within the NHS, meeting up with like-minded individuals who are attempting to tackle the challenges they face in their working lives through innovation and imagination, the programme has been highly restorative.
